Description

(N Modl.) v 0. A. GILMAN. KNIFE AND SCISSORS SHARPENER.
No. 431,887. Patented July 8, 1890.
CHARLES A PATENT OFFICE.
LVIN GILMAN, OF NORTH VVEARE, NEIV HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK TUCKER, OF SAME PLACE.
KNIFE AND SCISSORS SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,887, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed April 8,1890- Serial No. 347,012. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ALVIN GIL- MAN, of North lVeare, in the county of I-Iillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife and Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a description sufiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whieh Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sharpener, and Fig. 2 a top plan View of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawin gs.
My invention relates especially to a combin ed knife and scissors sharpener and strop; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the sharpener, which consists of a rectangular wooden block, into one side of which and near one end a handle B is secured, said handle projecting at right angles from said body. On the opposite face of the body a strop or finishing -surface Z) is formed. A verticallyarranged standard dis secured centrally in the body A, the upper end of said standard being forked or spread, forming arms f g. To each of said arms a metallic disk his secured by means of screws t'. These disks are arranged in the same vertical plane, and their edges are beveled to form cutting-edges. The disks are arranged so that their edges are in contact, or approximately in contact, as shown at m. A lip 19 projects laterally from the arm g beyond the outer edge of the disk h.
In the use of my improvement the edge of the knife to be sharpened is inserted between the cutting-disks h and drawn rapidly therethrough while in contact with said disks. The blade is thus quickly reduced to a sharp edge, which may be finished, as desired, upon the strop l). The lip 19 serves as a guide upon which to rest the scissors-blade while being sharpened, the cutting-edge of said blade being beveled, and said lip being arranged at right angles to the disk h. Said disk will reduce the edge of the scissors-blade at the proper bevel when being drawn across it. By means of the handle B the body A may be held against a suitable support at any desired angle. By loosening the screws 1' the disks may be turned to present a fresh cutting-surface to act on the knife-blades as frequently as they become dulled.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. In a knife-sharpener, a body provided with a handle, a standard mounted thereon, two cutting-disks mounted in the same vertical plane on said standard with their edges in contact, and an arm on said standard projecting beyond the edge of one of said disks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a knife-sharpener, a rectangular body provided with a handle, a strop on said body, a vertical standard mounted 011 the body and provided with a laterally-proj ecting arm, and two cutting-disks adj ustably clamped on said standard with their edges. approximately in contact, substantially as described.
In a knife-sharpener, the standard (l, pro vided with the lip 19, in combination with the disks h, mounted by screws z' on said standard and provided with the beveled cutting-edges j, substantially as described.
l. In a knife-sharpener, the body A,provided with the handle B and strop b, in combination with the standard d, mounted on said body and provided with the lip 13, and the disks h, mounted on said standard and having the beveled cutting-edges j, SUlDStELlb tially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES ALVIN GILMAN.
