W. J. ROBINSON. BATH TUB WITH FOLDING WASH BASIN.
No. 431,286. Patented July 1, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM J. ROBINSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, IENNSYLVANIA.
BATH-TUB WITH FOLDING WASH-BASIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,285, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed November 30, 1889. Serial No. 332,086- (No modeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. ROBINSON, a citizen of theUnited States, residingat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pe11nsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs with Folding \Vash-Basins, of which the foi lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a stationary bathtub provided with a wash-basin adapted to fold into therwall of the tub.
Heretofo re wash-basins have been arranged for use in conjunction with tubs in various ways; but the more recent improvements have been to provide the tub with a cabinet having a folding wash-basin and adapted to be lowered into such a position as to readily permit of its being used beneath the spigots of the tub and of being readily raised into its folded position again within the cabinet; but some of the principal disadvantages at-- tending upon the use of such a type of basin are that suds and water are apt to collect in the cabinet and sooner or later attract insects of various kinds thereto, and then it is difficult to keep the cabinet in a cleanly condition without almost constant attention be ing given thereto, and, moreover, owing to the complicated actuating mechanism that has to be employed for the operation of such a wash-basin, it is not only expensive, but liable to continually require repairs to keep the several parts'in good working condition.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a bath-tub with a basin adapted to be folded into a concavity formed in the wall thereof, and also with means connected with the tub and basin for maintaining the latter in a position for use.
The nature of my invention will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through aportion of a stationary bath-tub,vvith a concavity formed in the foot thereof and said tub provided with a wash-basin adapted to fold into said concavity in accordance with the particular features of my invention. Fi 2 is a top or plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A is a stationary bath-tub provided with a waste-pipe a, and with a housing or concavity A, formed vided with a tongue Z), having journals b and 6 held in eyes or bearings c and c, secured in any preferred manner to the frame-work of the tub. One of the journals of the tongue Z2 is extended laterally, and to the extremity is secured a cam or dog (1, which engages withthe catch c of a lever f, pivoted to a forked lug g,secured to the frame of the tub. In the frame-work a of the tub A is secured a spring g, normally engaging with the lever f, provided at its lower extremity with the catch 6, normally engaging with the cam or dog d. h and h are the water-inlet pipes, provided with spigots t and 1," for admitting water to the bath-tub A or basin B, as may be required.
The basin B is raised into an operative position for use by elevating the same sufliciently to cause the lever f, with its catch c, to engage with the cam or dog at, and the same maintained in that position by the force of the spring g against the lever f. The basin may be caused to assume a position within the housing or concavityA of the tub by simply pressing against the upper extremity of the lever f, which releases the catch 6 from its engagement with the cam or dog d, and the pivotal basin B by its own weight will drop into the housing or concavity A, and thus assume a concealed position in the tub A.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combinatiomwith a bath-tub provided with a housing or concavity, of a basin journaled to said tub, a cam or dog mounted on one of the journals of said basin, and a springpawl or lever adapted to be brought into engagement with said cam or dog to maintain said basin in a horizontal position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVM. J. ROBINSON.
