Be it known that I, WILLIAMS DICKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Northfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes and Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to brushes and brooms; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of devices for securing the brushing material in place.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional perspective View of a broom constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3, a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the broom, showing one of the end tufts lll section; and Fig. 4,'a perspective view of a hand-brush construeted in accordance with my invention.

The invention is designed primarily as an improvement upon the device illustrated in Letters Patent No. 1Sl,524,issued to meAu gust 29, 18765 and it consists, in the combination, with a stock, body, or head, of the bunches of brushing material secured thereto, and a me tallic plate secured to the under side of the head, stock, or body and firmly embracing the sides and ends of the body of brushing material.

Referring again to the drawings, A indicates the head, stock, or body of the brush, and B indicates a body or mass of brushing material, which is secured to the under side of the head in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of a wire 0, as shown in my former patent h'ereinbefore referred to.

D D indicate metallic plates, which press closely against the sides and ends of the body B of the brushing material, the said plates being formed preferably of a single piece of sheet metal bent to proper form, and arranged so that its ends shall overlap, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. These plates D D, or, more properly speaking, the sheets of metal of which said plates are formed, will be provided with a laterally-projecting flange, as at a, which is adapted to bear against the underface of the head, stock, or body, and is perforated at suitable intervals to receive tacks, nails, or equivalent fastening devices, which pass upward through said laterally-ex- Serial No. 347,615. tending flange and into the stock or body of the brush. A series of wrought-nails b are driven through the plate and the intervening body of brushing material and have their ends clinched down upon the outside of the plate in order to prevent the latter-from separating. By making the supporting-plates D of metal they are not affected by the Weather, nor do they rot when immersed in water, as the wooden blocks are liable to do.

In the use of the wooden blocks shown in my former patent the constant bending of the brushing material has a tendency to loosen said blocks and permit the Water to enter around the nail or screw-hole formed therein, and it is found in practice that after a short while the wood will either split or rot away at such opening and soon destroy the efficiency of the brush or broom. This objection is overcome by the construction herein shown and described, which is also lighter and cheaper than that last above referred to. The central portion B and the plates D D are placed in a vise and firmly clamped, and while thus held and clamped the nails 1) are driven through the same and clinched. I thus secure a much stiffer and more compact body than has before been possible in brushes of this character.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim is 1. The herein-described broom, consisting of the headstock, or body A, the brushing material B secured thereto, and the metallic plates D, embracing the body of brushing material and secured to the under side of the head A. v

2. The herein-described broom, consisting of the head, stock, or bodyA, the brushing material B secured thereto, and the flanged metallic plates D, embracing the sides and ends of the body of brushing material, provided with a laterally-extending flange to bear upon the under face of the head or stock, all substantially as shown.
