Description

PATENTED JULY 30, 1907.

EDMUND G. WAYMAN, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
HEMP DUSTIN G-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
V Patented July so, 1907.
Application filed October 1, 1906. Serial No. 836,980-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, EDMUND G. WAYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hemp Dusting- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to brushes and more particularly to a dusting brush made from hemp fiber and the object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, efficient and durable means of fastening the hemp fiber to the shank or handle, and with this object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully de scribed and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the lower end of the handle showing the collar arranged thereon. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the sleeve. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the soft metal ring.
In carrying out my invention I employ a wooden handle A which has a wooden collar B, firmly arranged thereon, the lower exterior end of said collar being cut away as shown at B in order to accommodate the bridle or apron O which is intended to envelop and As before stated the collar B is firmly secured upon the handle A, a short distance above the lower end of said handle and in order to securely fasten the hemp fibers to the said handle I employ a metallic sleeve D and a soft metal ring E and in practice I prefer to fold the hemp fibers F over the upper edge of the metal sleeve D and after the entire sleeve has been enveloped in this manner, the sleeve with the fibers is forced up over the end of the handle and pushed up until the fibers are held firmly between the upper edge of the sleeve and the bottom of the collar B as most clearly shown in Fig. 2. The remaining fibers are then arranged upon the metallic ring E and it is then arranged upon the lower end of the shank and forced upwardly with great force and the narrow edge of the ring being arranged uppermost the fibers and ring will be wedged tightly against the inner fibers carried by the sleeve and this wedging action will extend also up against the lower edge of the sleeve, thereby firmly binding the ring, and its fibers and also the sleeve and its fibers.
In order to prevent any possible dislocation of the ring E, I may drive the tack G into the handle just below the said ring, but as a rule the wedging action is so great that this tack will not be necessary. After the fibers have been securely fastened upon the lower end of the handle as just described, the apron or bridle O is arranged thereby making the completed brush.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A brush comprising a handle provided with a collar, fibers of hemp, a metallic sleeve adapted to encircle the lower end of the handle and carry a plurality of the strands of fiber and a metallic ring having fibers also arranged thereon and adapted to be fastened to the handle below the metal sleeve as set forth.
2. A brush comprising; a handle provided with a collar, a sleeve adapted to be arranged upon the lower end of the handle and having fibers arranged thereon and a wedge ring carrying fibers and also adapted to be fitted upon the handle below the sleeve as set forth.
3. A brush comprising a handle having a collar arranged thereon, a metal sleeve and a wedge shaped ring together with fibers of hemp adapted to be folded over the upper edges of the sleeve and ring, said sleeve being adapted to fit upon the handle and the ring adapted to fit also upon the handle and wedge the fibers securely between the ring and handle as set forth.
