JAMES ASHW ORTH, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
sTovE FOR coNsuMme STRAW, HAY, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Paar No. 430,912, dated June 24, 1890. Application filed September 30,1889. Serial No. 325,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES AsHWORTI-I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves for Oonsumin g Straw, Hay, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of this invention in perspective. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views. Fig. 6 isa detail plan view disclosing the valve (1.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of stoves more especially adapted for burning straw, hay, hemp, flax, corn stalks and cobs, cane-pulp, weeds, and refuse suitable for-fuel; and it consists of the novel combination and construction of parts, as will fully appear from the following description and accompanying illustration,
I11 carrying out my invention I employ a base A, suitably supported upon legs, a removable magazine, drum, or cylinder B, and a cap or dome O, the drum or magazine being mounted upon the base and the cap or dome The base A has an ash-pan chamber a, in the front part of which is a series of draft-openin gs b, which are opened and closed as required by a slide or valve 1), having a series of registering openings in it, and adjusted upon the said ashpan chamber front between cleats or flanges thereon. This slide has a suitable knob I) for its manipulation. A semicircular cleat or flange c is cast upon the base A at its rear side, while upon the front part of the drum or magazine is secured a bar or cleat 0, meeting the cleat or flange 0 end to end, and which jointly inclose or cover the lower or base edge The drum or magazine B has in its bottom a central aperture or passage cl for the admission of air or draft necessary for combustion to the contents of the drum or magazine. This aperture or passage is adapted to be closed to prevent the accidental escape of any remaining fuel, when it is desired to remove the drum or magazine for refilling, by means of a valve or slide cl, pivoted to the bottom of the latter, and having a rod or handle (1 extending out through a slot (i in the side of the drum or magazine. The drumBhas at the back'near its bottom a valved or slide-covered opening eto further promote combustion. To opposite points upon the sides of the drum or maga zine B are secured hand-holds or handles f for the convenient lifting and carrying of the latter in efiecting its removal and replacement. The drum or magazine has appliedto its upper end an annular flange or ring h,
which is formed with opposite L-shaped slots or notches 2' extending through the top and inner side of the annulus or flange, and which receives projections or studs z" t, projecting from a rim 1' on the under side of the cap or dome, and thus provide for detachably connecting the drum or dome thereto.
D D are retaining-rods which are let into and are secured in sockets j j on the base A at their lower ends, while their upper ends are similarly secured or connected, as at k, to the ring resting just above and closely to the top edge of the drum or magazine, the drum or magazine being removable from between the base and cap or dome without disturbing the latter. The base-rods do not extend entirely around the base and cap or dome, but sufficient space is left between the front ones to permit the removal of the drum. The cap or dome has attached to it a smokepipe, and in its lowerportion a circular series of air passages or apertures, and over the same is adjusted a sliding band or slide Z, having a series of registering openings to open and close the said openings as required, said band or slide having a knob for its adjustment or movement.
In practice I provide a plurality of drums or magazines, having one filled and readyto displace the one in which the process of combustion is going on, as soon as its contents are consumed, the latter then being removed and refilled, as above intimated. Itis obvious that by the requisite adjustment or opening and closing of the valve-openings alternately 2. The stove having a base, a removable drum or magazine, and a cap or dome, said drum or magazine having a band or annulus provided in its top and inner wall with opposite notches or slots receiving projections or studs on a rim of the dome or cap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aff x my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES ASHWORTH.
