W. ASSHETON. AUTOGRAPHIG REGISTER.
No. 429,495. Patented June 3, 1890.
lll/111111 II'IIIIIA mles/@mm UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM ASSIIETOMOE sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORTO THE ASSHETON DUPLIOATING REGISTER- COMPANY, OEv ILLINOIS.
AUTOGRAPH|GREG|STER- f* SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,495, dated June 3, 1890. Application filed February 27, 1888. Serial No. 265,398. (N o model.)
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ASSI-IETON, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The novel features of the present construction will appear in the description and be noted inthe claims, reference also being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal Section of the improvedl register, the section being taken just within the near side of the register-case; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the register; Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a vertical cross-Section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, avertical cross-section onthe line 5 5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6, a detail, being a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 3.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
A represents the register-case. Its topa is hinged at c to the side a2 of the case, andthe lock as is used to secure the free edge of the top to the side co4. Any other suitable means may be adopted to render the interior of the case accessible.
B represents the reel from which the paper webs C and Dare delivered. iThe webs pass, first, respectively, over the roller-bearings E F, and thence, with the carbon sheet G, used in man ifolding, interposed, the webs pass over the bearing-surface H, and then between the rolls I l. After passing the rolls I I the upper web C passes a knife J and then without the case, so that its projecting end c can, by drawing it over the knife, be separated from the main portion of the web. The under Web D is led from the rolls I I to and is wound upon the reel K.
The means for eecting the movement of the webs and the operation of the device are as follows: The reel B is journaled in suitable bearings b to enable the reel to rotate and the webs to be unwound whenever the ends of the webs are drawn upon. The web D, in initiating the operation, is Wound upon the reel K, so that when that reel is rotated case by means of the knob N.
the web D shall be unwound from the reelB and drawn over the bearing-surface H and wound upon the reel K. The shaft Zc of the reel K is -journaled in suitable bearings k. L represents a pinion loose upon theshaft k.
M represents a rack-bar engaging with the pinion L and extending longitudinally Within the case A, and having its end m Sliding in a guide m. A spring fm2 encircles the end m., bearing at one end against a shoulder m3 upon the rack-bar and at the other end against the guide m. When the rack-bar is moved toward the left-hand end of the case Fig. 1,the pinion L is rotated in the directionof the arrow Z, Fig. 1, whereupon the pinion engages 'with a pawl Z, whichis pivoted to the reel K, and the reel K in consequence is rotated in the direction of the arrowV Z and thel web D Wound upon the reel K. The wind-ing of the web Dupon the reel K causes the upper Web C to be drawn along with it over the surface H, and its end c tobe discharged from the case A, as shown in Fig. 1. Onreleasing the rack-bar the spring m2 acts to return the rackbar to its original position, during which `movement the pinion is free of the pawl Z',
and the reel K remains stationary, and to insure its remainingstationary the reel may have a ratchet 195, Figs. 3 and 6, with Which-a pawl Z010 acts if thereel tends to turn. The rackbar is moved from the outside of the register- This knob works in the slot c5 in the case A, and is attached to the rack-bar at the inner side of the case Side c4, and by moving the knob along the slot o5 the rack-bar is moved-to effect the winding of the web D upon the reel K, as described, and on releasing the knob it is, through the agency ot the springen?, restored to the right-hand `end of the slot a5, Fig. 1. The movement of the rack -bar is further steadied by means of the arm O, which at o is jointed to the knob, at o is hinged, and at o2 is fastened to ashaft o3, which is jou rnaled in bearings o4 and -is provided with the springarms o5. For the arm 0 is thus also made, as the rack-bar is moved to wind the web upon the reel K, to relieve the tension upon the webs upon the reel B by causing the Springarms o5, which bear upon the webs, to assume IOO the guide m', the spring m2, the jointed arm O, and springs o5, and knob N, of the rolls i z", the rollers E F, the reel B, the reel K, the pinion 7c, loose on the shaft of said reel, the springeonti'olled pawl Z', engaging said pinion, and the bearing-surface H, substantially as speoied.
fitness my hand this 25th day of February, 1888.
TILLIAM ASSHETON.
