Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE J. GILBERT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETERGENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,435, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed September 9, 1889. Serial No. 323,454. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JESSE J. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im+ provements in Compounds for Cleaning Marble and other Stone, of which the following is such a full, clear, concise, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to composition particularly adapted for cleaning marble, but which may also be used upon other stones-as, for example, slate and blue-stone-my object being ,to provide a cleansing compound which will remove dirt and stains and restore the original color and polish.
In preparing my compound I take six pounds of muriatic acid, with which I mix one pound of borax and one pound of soapstone finely powdered. To this may also he added two ounces of alum and two ounces of sal-ammoniac. Theproportionsmaybesomewhat varied, what I consider essential being the mixture of the muriatic acid with the borax and soapstone. The compound can be applied with an ordinary scrubbing-brush,
and dirt, stains, and discolorations will rap idly disappear. Very rough portions of the stone to be cleaned may be smoothed down and polished independently with pumicestone, and a little powdered pumice-stone may be added to the mixture itself, if desired. I have also found that marble cleaned with my compound retains its color better and will not turn yellow, as it is apt to when the ordinary cleaning compounds are used.
Having now described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described compound for cleaning marble, &c., consisting of a mixture of muriaticacid, borax, and soapstone, substantially in the proportions hereinbefore set forth, and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described compound for cleaning marble, &c., consisting of a mixture of muriatic acid, borax, soapstone, alum, and
sal-ammoniac, substantially in the proportions hereinbefore set forth, and for the purpose specified.
