To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN FREEMAN, MICHAEL FREEMAN, and WILLIAM E. DAVIs, of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Cutters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 7
Our invention relates to feed-cutters, and
will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is .a side view of our device, showing the driving mechanism. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a broken plan View. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, with the nest of cog-wheels removed. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section of the gearwheel for driving the lower feed-roll shaft,

A is the shaft of the cutter-head, which shaft has first hung to it an arm B, and outside of that arm carries pinion O. The arm B has an elbow, from which a stud D projects, and
0 this stud carries a cog-wheel E, on the back of which is a pinion F. The lower end of the arm B carries another elbow, which is formed with a stud G, that carries a pinion G, and below the stud G the arm has a 3 5 curved projection H, which is connected by a link I with the lower end of alever L, which lever is provided with a pawl IWI for engagement with a rack N. The shaft 0, that carries the lower feed-roller P, is provided with a 40 nest of cog-wheels a b o, and on its opposite end this shaft passes through one end of a link d, and outside of this link carries a cog-Wheel E. The other end of link 01 fits loosely on a stud formed on the lower end of a link d, and the upper end of this link is fitted ona shaft 0 of the upper feed-roller 2', which carries outside of the link d a sprocket-wheel I, while the stud on the lower end of link d carries outside of link d a sprocket-wheel j,
which is cast on the inner face of the cog- 50,
wheel k. The link cl fits loosely on'the shaft 0 and the stud of link cl, and the two sprocket-wheels are connected by a drivechain m, the result being that no matter how much the shaft 0 maybe lifted in the slot P 5.5 in the cutter-box q the cog-wheels E and It are always in contact and mesh with each other.
The bearings R R of the shaft of the upper feed-roller 2' are adapted to slide in slots P in the cutter-box, and are provided with hangers 4, that are slotted to receive stud ion the curved ends of arms S S, that project from a shaft T, that is loosely journaled in the sides of the box q, and these arms and shaft T serve to maintain the roller 2' in a horizontal position and parallel with roller P.
In operation it is only necessary when the feed is to be changed to throw the pinion G out of gear by means of lever L, and then to adjust the nest of gearing a b c in or out to bring any particular one of said gears in line with pinion G, and then by operating lever L to adjust pinion G into mesh with the proper gearing of the nest. The nest of gearing is formed with the usual hub a, which is splined on the shaft 0, and this shaft is formed with indentations b to receive the lowerend of a locking-bolt c.that is fitted in a housing 0 in the face of the gear 0. A thumb-piece c projects from bolt 0 through a slot-in the front of the housing, and the bolt is forced inward toward the center of the gearing by a springb, that surrounds it, and is confined between the hub of the thumb-piece and the upper portion of the housing. The hub a fits rather loosely on shaft 0, and when the nest a b c is to be adjusted it is only necessary to lift the bolt 0 out of whatever indentation it may happen to be in and then draw 0 the nest out or thrust it in until the proper indentation comes under the bolt, and thus the nest will be securely locked in just the desired position on the shaft.
Instead of using abolt, as in Fig. 5,we may 5 use a flat spring 19 which is attached at its inner end to the'hub a, and, passing through an opening in the nest, has a prong b that engages notches in the spline b. The prong maybe stamped out of the spring, so as to leave a thumb-piece b, by which the prong may be lifted when desired.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
