WILLIAM JOHNSTON, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOLT FOR DOUBLE DOORS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 519,687, dated May 8, 1894.
V Application filed August 17,1893. Serial No. 483,374. (No model.)
To a, whom it may concern.-
l 3e it known that I, WILLIAM JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts for Double Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, which form a part of this speclfication.
My invention relates to an improved double door lock, and it consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a sectlonal side elevation of my improved lock arranged in position on one section of a double door, said lock being constructed in accordance with my invention.
To put my invention into practice I provide a shell or casing 1 having a front plate 2, and adapted to be mortised into the door in a manner Well known to the art. Arranged within this shell 1, are two curved pieces 6 each of which is provided with racks adapted to mesh w1th a small cog wheel 3, arranged on the shaft 5 to which the knob 4; is attached. A suitable roller 10 is arranged beneath these bars 6, for the purpose of keeping the same in mesh with the cog wheel 3. Pivoted to these curved pieces 6 are rods 7'which are attached to two bolts 8 at the top and bottom of the door, said bolts operating in suitable guide pieces 9 let into the frame of the door. To lock these curved pieces, either when the bolts 8 are out or drawn into the guides 9 Iform in the edge of each two slots 14 adapted to engage with the bent endv of two pivoted levers 13, said levers being loosely connected to a grooved piece 12 attached to a bar 11 capable of being moved'in the direction of its length. 'To operate this bar 11 I form in the front plate 2 a recess which exposes the projecting end 18 of the said bar 11, which when pressed inward will move the said levers 13 to release the samefrom the notches 14: in the bars 6. A spiral spring 16 bearing against the piece 12 and a bar 15 will at all times keep the end 18 of the bar 11 exposed.
In operation, by slightly revolving or turning the knob 4 the curved pieces are operated upon to withdraw the bolts 8 from, or to force the same into their sockets, and the levers entering the notches 14: will lock the same in thatposition. To release the curved bars ,6 from the levers 13 it is only.necessary to press the bar 11 inward.
I Having thus described my invention, I claim The herein described double door lock, consisting of the shell 1 having a front plate 2 and the whole adapted to be mortised into one section of a double door, the curved bars 6 arranged within said shell the bars or rods 7 connecting said bars with thebolts 8, the ratchets formed on said bars, the cog wheel 3 in mesh with the said ratchets, the roller 10, and the locking device consisting of the bar 11 the pivoted lever 13 and spring 16, all arranged and combined for service as described.-
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 4th day of WILLIAM JOHNSTON. In presence 0f--- GEORGE E. BOTHWELL, M. E. HARRISON.
August,
