SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,295, dated J' une 3, 1890.
`Application filed December 14, 1889. Serial No. 333,722. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known tha/t1, GEORGE W. WARNER, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of improvements known as door hangers, employed for supporting doors from the top, and wherein the axles of the wheels or rollers of the hanger run 011 horizontal rails located above the door, and the hanger is secured to the top of the door.
The main and primary object of the invention is to embody in a door-hanger of simple and durable construction mechanism by .which the several parts thereof may be perfectly and accurately adjusted. with respect to each other and to the door, so that the latter will hang perfectly true. This I accomplish by the arrangement of the connectinglinks, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Another object of the invention is to provide automatic and perfect locking devices, whereby the main portion of the hanger and that portion thereof secured to the door will be securely locked together by the simple act of placing the two parts in operative positions.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of devices herein illustrated and described, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a side elevation of the door-hanger embodying my invention applied to the upper portion of a door, the rail for supporting the roller being partially broken away. Fig. 2 illustrates the same in an end elevation. Fig. 3 illustrates in vertical sectional view the plate secured to the top of the door and that portion of the hanger adapted to engage said plate. Fig. 4, in two parts, shows in perspective view the automatic locking mechanism for securing together the hanger and the door-plate.
In the drawings, A is the door. B B- are suitable rails, preferably of wood, although sometimes of iron, secured at a suitable distance above the door, and upon which the wheels or rollers O O run.
Ais a metal plate of the width of the door A, adapted to be secured thereto by means of screws a or other, suitable means. The said plate A is provided with a central longitudinal recess ct, the adjacent walls of which recess taper toward each other, thus making the recess dovetailed in shape, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. As a matter of fact, the plate A is constructed of two bars joined together by transverse bars or webs a2 at suitable intervals, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and it is through these web portions that the screws a are passed.
C is a rider-bar, preferably of cast metal, having a straight bearing-edge c adapted to rest upon the axle c of the wheels or rollers O O. The forward end of the rider-bar C', which is bent downwardly and rearwardly,

having a horizontal elongated transverse slot or opening c2. The rear end of the rider-bar O is provided with a downwardly-extending arm O3, at the lower end of which is an enlargement c3. In said arm above this enlargement o3 is an `inclined transverse opening or slot c4.
D is a plate provided with a dovetailed extension or rib CZ upon its lower face, which dovetailed extension cl is adapted to be inserted in the dovetailed recess c of the plate A whereby the said plates D and A may be united. The plate D is provided at its forward end with a raised lug d and near its rear end with a second lug cl2, the latter having an elongated transverse slot d3 therein. The plate D is also provided at its rear end with a third lug d4. This lug d4 is an enlarged extension of the plate D, and is provided with an upwardly-extending slot or opening d5.
E is an adj Listing-screw adapted to be passed from the under side of the lug d4 through the hole or opening d5 therein and then into the opening in the enlargement c3 of the depending arm O3. The head e of the adjustingscrew E rests upon the under side of the lug d4 and the end of the said screw engages the nut o5, located in the lower end of the slot c4 of the arm C3.

F is a link movably connected at one end to the lug CZ of the plate D and at its other end to the depending arm C3 of the rider-bar C by means of pivot-pins ff.
F is a second link, movably secured at its ends in the slots c2 and of the arm C2 and of the lug cl2, respectively, by the pivot-pins f f', which latter are adapted to travel in said slots, as will be readily understood. The links F and F', which cross each other as shown, are secured together by the pivotins f.
It will thus be understood that a very free movement of the links F and F on their respective pins ff f is made possible by the location ot' the pins f f in the slots c2 d3, and also that a greater range ot adjustment is possible by the construction employed. Any strain on the several parts is equalized, and greater strength is imparted to the whole structure by this novel arrangement of the links F and F'.
As a separate and further improvement, I provide a link D', preferably ot wire, and hinge or pivot the same to the plate D in any convenient manner. The end d of the link D' extends at right angles to the main portion of the link and is adapted to engage the forward shoulders or faces of the upwardlyextending lugs a3 of the plate A. These lugs a3 are formed by cutting away a portion of the sides of the'plate A', as clearly shown in Fig. 4, thus forming also a pair of shoulders a, opposite the lug a3. a5 is a lug or stop located upon the upper face of the forward end ot' the plate A', and against which the end of the plate D may rest, if desired.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The plate A is iirst secured to the upper edge of the door A by means of the screw a, so that the shoulders or lugs a will come adjacent to the end of the door. The hanger is then placed in position with the wheels C C resting upon the tracks B B. The forward end ot the plate D is then brought into j uxtaposition to the rear end (that end bearing the shoulders d3) of the plate A. The plate D is secured to the plate A' by having its dovetailed iiange d passed into the dovetailed recess or opening a of the plate A', the movement ofthe plate D with respect to the plate A being indicated by the arrow in Fig. l. The plate D is moved in the direction indicated a suieient distance-that is, until the transverse arm d of the link D has passed over the lugs a3. It will be obvious that the weight of the link D will cause the arm d thereof to seek the lowest point of the cut-away portion of the plate A', and that any movement of the plate D in the direction opposite to that shown by the arrow in Fig. 1 will be arrested by reason of the engagement of said arm d with the said lugs as. The forward movement of the plate D with respectto the plate A will be similarly arrested by reason of the engagement of the link D' with the shoulders a4.
It is manifest from the above description that the plates D and A' will be locked together automatically by the simple act of sliding the one in and upon the other. To remove the plate D from the plate A it will vbe simply necessary to raise the arm d6 of the link D' vertically a sufficient distance to clear the top of the shoulders or lugs a, whereupon the plate D maybe moved bodily backward, as will be manifest.
The vertical adjustment of the rider-bar C' with respect to the bar D may be accomplished, as above stated, by the adjustingscrew E. It will be understood that when,by movement of the screw E, the rider-bar C is raised said rider-bar C' will remain in a po sition parallel to that ot' the plate D during said adjustment by reason of the slotted pivotal connection of the link F' with said riderbar and with the plate D. I am thus enabled to obtain an accuracy and nicety of adjustment by the simple turning of the screw E, preserving at all times the parallelism of the rider-bar C' and the plate D.
It will be understood of course that the location of the slots c2 cl3 may be varied without producing any appreciable effect upon the operation of the links, provided one slot is on the rider-bar and the other is in the plat-e D. For example, the slot d might be located in the lug CZ', if desired. I regard this construction and arrangement of the links and their connections as very important and as constituting the main feature of my invention.

l. In a door-l1anger,the combination of a rider-bar, a base-plate, and two connectinglinks, said links being movably connected to each other and to said rider-bar and baseplate, and means for adjust-ing the position ot the base-plate with respect to the riderbar, substantially as specified.
2. In a door-hanger, the combination of a rider-bar provided with a slot or elongated opening, with a base-plate provided with an elongated slot, a link movably connected to said rider-bar and baseplate in the slots therein, a second link pivoted to said firstmentioned link and to the base-plate and rider-bar, and an adj usting-screw in engagement with said base-plate and 1ider-bar,sub stantially as described.
3. In a door-hanger having atwo-part bascplate, the two parts being united by sliding the one over the other, a pivoted gravity pawl or link secured to the upper half and adapted to engage suitable shoulders or lugs on the lower half of said base-plate, whereby said two parts are automatically locked together.
