W. H. JULIAN 80 J. B. GUILLAUME.
I SCREW. No. 429,241. Patented June s, 1890 UNIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM II. JULIAN AND JOHN B. GUILLAUME, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO,
ASSIGNORS, BY DIRECT A-N D MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO CHARLES E. VVOLF- KILL AND AUGUSTUS S. KNAPP, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, AND PHILIP F. FISH, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
SCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,241, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed December 20, 1889. Serial No- 384,358. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, \VILLIAM II. JULIAN and JOHN B. GUILLAUME, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screws; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in screws, and has especial reference to what we term a countersinking screw; and the leading object of our invention is the provision of a screw of this character which will enter the material rapidly and easily without tearing the material, and which will hold firmly and reliably in the material.
A further object of our invention is the provision of a screw which can be counter- 2 5 sunk any desired distance and hold securely,
and which can be produced at a low figure.
To attain the desired objects our invention consists of ascrew having blades arranged at an incline or obliquely to the axis of the 0 screw.
Further, our invention consists of a screw having blades formed on the head and body or shank thereof.
Further, our invention consists in certain 3 5 novel details of construction and arrangement, substantially as herein illustrated, described, and specifically defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated a screw constructed in accordo ance with and embodying our invention, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of our improved screw. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section thereof; and Fig. 4 represents a modification thereof.
Our improved screw in general appearance is similar to the ordinary screw, the head A,
body 13, and threads 0 being the same as in all screws, and the head being provided with the usual slot D to receive a driving imple- 5o ment.
In our invention we form blades E on the screw, which are arranged on the head and body or shank of the screw at an incline to the axis and opposite each other. The said blades extend from the under side of the head of the screw onto the body thereof, and are so inclined with relation to the body of the screw as to bore or cut the material with ease and rapidity as the screw is forced in, and the front face E of the blades is smooth and the rear face F is rounded, thus enabling the screw to enter the wood without danger of breaking or tearing it. The blades, it will also be seen, taper from their upper to their lower ends, the lower ends merging into the body of the screw, also permitting the screw to be easily driven.
It will thus be seen that we provide a screw which can be manufactured at a small expensc, which can be easily driven without danger of tearing the material, and which will hold firmly in the wood when driven, thus combining all the features desired to produce a thoroughly practical screw of this 7 5 character.
\Ve claim as our inventionv l. A countersinking screw having a blade or blades arranged obliquely to the body or axis thereof.
2. A countersinking screw having a blade or blades on the head and body thereof.
3. A countersinking screw having blades inclined with relation to the axis of the screw and having one of their faces smooth and the other rounding.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM II. JULIAN. JOHN B. GUILLAUME.

J osEPH W. ALLEN, CLINTON S. OLINGER.
Correction in Letters Patent No. 429,241.
It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 429,241, granted June 3, 1890, upon the application of William Julian and John B. Guillaume, of Springfield, Ohio, for an improvement in Screws, were erroneously issued to Charles E. Wolf kill, Augustus S. Knapp, and Philip 1*. Fish as owners of the entire interest in said invention; that said Letters Patent should have been issued to William H. Julian and John B. Guillaume and Charles E. Wolfhill, Augustus 6116mm) and Philip F. Fish jointly, said \Volfkill, Knapp, and Fish being essignees of one-half interest only in said inventionas shown by assignments of record in this oflice; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 17 th day of June, A. D. 1890.
