SPIGOT FOR REFRIGERATORS OR WATER-COOLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,121, dated June 3, 1890.

To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS ENGQUIST, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Spigots for Refrigerators or Water-Coolers, of which the following `is a specification.
One object of my invention is to so construct a spigot for refrigerators or water-coolers that [o the same will be screened from view and will not be liable to be accidentally opened by contact with the dress of a person passing the refrigerator, a further ob ject being to prevent drip and yet dispense with the usualtuinblerholder beneath the spigot. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view, partly in section and zo partly in elevation, of part of a refrigerator or water-cooler with a spigot constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being in the position assumed when the valve of the spigot is closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view 2 5 showing the valve of the spigot opened. Fig. 3 is a further section of the spigot, showing its valve closed; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1.

Free to slide longitudinally on the casing of the spigot is a ring or yoke g, connected by rods h to the head of the valve-stem, and depending from this yoke is a drip-catcher E,
having a tube i extending inward through the casing A and terminating above the usual drip catcher or tray G, located beneath the tank B within the casing of the refrigerator. It will thus be seen that as the valve-stem is Serial No. 325,881. (No model.)
moved inward to open the valve the drip- 5o catcher will be carried inward likewise, so as not to interfere with the free discharge of t-he water from the nozzle m of the spigot,the drip-catcher resuming its position beneath said nozzle as the valve is closed, so as to catch 5 5 any drip from the nozzle and convey it to the drip-tray within the casing.
The valve b has a forwardly-projecting stem b', which fits snugly to the opening in the valve-seat, and is of such length that as the 6o valve is opened the flow of water through the opening in the valve-seat is prevented until the drip-catcher has been moved away from beneath the nozzle of the spigot, as shown in Fig. 2.
The spigot and its drip-catcher are inclosed within an outer casing H, confined between the casing A and a shoulder on the valve-casing D,the outer portion of this external casing being made in any ornamental form which 7o may be desired, and an opening formed in the bottom of the casing for the discharge of the water from the spigot.
Hung to the external casing is a lever J, having a portion n within the casing and a portion 'n' outside of the same, the portion n of the lever bearing upon the head f of the valve-stem, so that by drawing forward the depending portion n of the lever in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the valve-stem 8o will be pushed into the casing of the spigot and the valve will be opened, as shown in Eig. 2, the depending portion of the lever dropping to its normal or vertical position when the valve is closed, as shown in Fig. l. It may in some cases, however, be advisable to hold the valve open foraconsiderable time, and for this reason the head f of the valvestem has a notch w, wit-h which the portion 'a of the operating-lever engages when the valve 9o `is fully opened, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to hold the valve in this position, the valve being released and permitted to close when the lever is thrown down in the'direction of the arrow, Eig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a refrigerator or-like struetureand its spigot-casing, with project- 1 ing valve-stem'andouter casing inclosing said spigot, and a lever hung tosaid outer easing and havingwithin the saine an arm for acting upon the projecting valve-stem of the spigot, substantially as specified. v
2. The-combination of a refrigerator or like structure havinga spigot with longitudinallysliding valve-stein'anda sliding drip-catcher movable with said valve-stein, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the refrigerator or like structure and its spigot, having a projecting valvestem with notched head, the Outer casing inclosing the spigot, and an operating-lever hung to said outer casing and having-within the same a portion for acting on the valve-stem and engaging with the notched head of the same to hold the valve in the open position, substantially as specified.
L The combination of the spigot and its longitudinally-moving valve, the drip-catcher moving with said valve, and a projecting stem on the valve for closing the spigot-opening until the drip-catcher has been moved from beneath the nozzle, substantially as specified.
o. The combination-of the'spigot and its 4valvestein, ythe inelosing-easing'having an opening therein, and the operatinglever for thevalve passing through said opening and having opposite bars recessed for engagement with the casing, substantiallyasfspecified.
