COMPRESSION FAUCET AND VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,405, dated September 29, 1896. Application filed January 22 ,1896. Serial No. 576,400. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBERT S. HILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring field, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression Faucets and Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to compression faucets or cocks, and more particularly to the valves thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved faucet or cook having a removable valve-disk, and also having means for supporting said removable disk in such manner as to utilize the compression of said disk for holding the same in place, notwithstanding the shrinkage of the material of which said disk is made.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved article of manufacture in the nature of a compressible valve-disk adapted to be removably secured in position within faucets or cocks of this character.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved cock or faucet and shows the valvespindle or operating member in full lines. Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of the valve-operating member or spindle detached and shows the valve in section and the valve-disk thereof in its normal operative position relatively to its carrier. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but shows the valve-disk drawn from its carrier a relatively great distance, but without the same becoming detached therefrom. Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view taken in line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a top View of that portion of the valve-body having the valve-chamber, and also a sectional view thereof, taken in line b b; and Fig. 6 is a top view of the threaded member or nut and a side view thereof.
Similar characters of reference designate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the preferred form thereof herein shown and described my improved faucet or cook comprises a suitable body 9, having a valvechamber 10, open at the top thereof for the reception of a valve -operating member or spindle, hereinafter described, said body also having induction and eduction passages 11 and 12, respectively, and a valve-opening 13, intermediate of said passages, having a valve-seat 14. surrounding said valve-opening. The valve chamber 10 has an interior flange or collar 10, having one or more transverse recesses ornotches 10". Removably disposed within this valve-chamber 10 is a centrally-bored and interiorly-threaded member or nut 15, having a suitable shoulder 16, adjacent to its upper end, adapted to rest on the upper edge of the interior flange or collar 10 of the valve-chamber, and having one or more ears or project-ions 18 adapted to engage the notch or notches 10" of the interior flange or collar, whereby said member is prevented from rotation on the operation of the valve-operatin g member, said member or nut preferably having its top flush with the top of the valve-chamber 10.
The valve-operating member or spindle 20 is provided with screw-threads 21, engaging the threads of the member or nut 15, and has a handle 22 for operating the same.
As one means for closing the upper end of the valve-chamber 10 a suitable interiorlythreaded and centrally-bored cap or closure 25 is provided and engages with. screwthreads 26 on the outer wall of the valve-chamber 10. Suitable packing 27 is interposed between the upper ends of said chamber and valve member 15 and said cap or closure and surrounds the spindle or valve-operating member adjacent to that portion thereof which extends through the cap-opening. This cap or closure 25 is provided with an interiorlythreaded stuflin g box or chamber 28, adapted to receive suitable packing 29. An exteriorly-threaded plug or nut 29 engages the threads of the stuffing-box for compressing said packing and closing the upper end of said stufflng-box. The closure or cap 25 has a polygonal flange 29 fon the reception of a wrench, whereby the cap or closure can be secured on the body 9.
The valve 30, which comprises in a general way 'a carrier a and a compressible and removable member in the preferred form thereof herein shown and described, may be formed either separately from the valve-actuating member or spindle 20 and secured thereto in any suitable way, such as by screws or other fastening devices, or may be formed thereon integral therewith, and this being the preferred form of construction it is therefore herein shown in accordance with such preferred form for the purpose of this specification.
The carrier ahas a preferably tubular chamber 31, a downwardly-extendin g projection or stem 31, disposed cent-rally therein, and-an enlarged chamber 32 concentric with the tubular chamber 31, the j uncture-wall between said chambers 31 and 32 forming a shoulder 33, and said chambers 31 and 32 constituting receiving-chambers for the compressible and removable member or valve-disk Z), which in the preferred form shown consists of a disk 35, preferably made of some well-known slightly-compressible material, such as guttapercha or rubber composition, and is shown formed of relatively small thickness in vertical cross-section and has a tubular stem 36, extending upwardly therefrom, adapted to receive the projection or stem 31 of the carrier (I. This compressible member has its disk 35, adjacent to its tubular stem 36, engaging the shoulder 33, forming the j uncturewall of the disk- chambers 31 and 32, and which shoulder 33 directly opposes the pressure of the valve-seat when the disk is closed thereon and also protects the material forming the tubular stem 36 from direct displacement by the action of the valve-seat, except that the tubular stem 36 on the gradual compression of the disk 35 will naturally be carried within the tubular chamber 31, for which purpose a slight space 37 (see Fig. 2) will ordinaril y be provided at the upper end of such tubular chamber 31, adjacent to the end of the tubular stem 36, and into which space the stem-may extend by degrees, as said main portion of the disk is gradually reshaped by continued use.
In operation, when the valve is closed 011 its seat, the pressure on the outer face of the disk tends to compress said disk in thickness, and thereby spreads or extends the same diametrically, both inwardly and outwardly, from the line of bearingof the valve-seat, the spreading of the same inwardly being permitted by having the bore of the tubular stem 36 extending not only through the stem, but also through or nearly through the disk 35, and hence, as above stated, when the disk is subject to compression, on the operation of the valve-actuating member or spindle 20 the material will be compressed and will naturally flow laterally, both inwardly and outwardly, and will be thereby compressed upon the projection or stem 310f the carrier, and, as the disk is also subject to shrinkage, especially when standing dry after having been under pressure for a long time-for in stance, when the pipes to which the faucet has been applied are out of use foraseasonon such shrinkage the material of the valvedisk will be still farther drawn upon the carrier-stem 31, thereby impinging said carrierstem between the opposing faces of the tubular stem 36, and thus holding said eompressible member I) properly in place within its carrier. Furthermore, by having the carrierstem 31 extend through the depth of the tubular stem 36, and also through a portion of the disk 35, such carrier-stem constitutes a relatively long guide or hearing whereby the valve-disk may slide outwardly a considerable distance without becoming disconnected from such stein, so that said carrierstem 31 may be drawn from the valve-seat a relatively great distance, so as to secure the widest opening of said valve without the valvedisk becoming detached from the carrier-stem and thereby rendering the faucet 01' valve inoperative. By having these valvedisks removable, when worn, they can be replaced by a new valve-disk, and for this purpose the valve-disks are intended to be placed upon themarket as separate articles of 1nanufacture and sale and supplied to the dealer or user independently of the faucet.
It will be understood that this construction of valve, embodying a removable member in the nature of a disk, may be used in connection with other devices besides compression faucets or cocks, if desired. It will also be understood that in practice the chambers 31. and 32 need not necessarily be circular, but may be angular, if desired, and that the disk 35 and its stem 36 maybe constructed to conform to such construction of chambers. The projection 31' may also be dispensed with and the stem 36 be made solid and compressed by the action of the valve against the wall of the chamber 31.
Ilaving thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a device of the class specified, the combination with a body having a valvechamber and also having induction and eduction passages and a valve-seat intermediate thereof 5 a valve in said chamber consisting of a carrier having a chamber and a downwardly-extending projection or stem and a compressible member comprising two parts of differential diameters, that part thereof having the smallest diameter extending into and closely fitting said chamber and secured therein by impingement with said projection or stem.
In a device of the class specified,the combination of a body having a valve-chamber, and also havinginduction and eduction passages, and a valve-seat intermediate thereof; a valve in said chamber-consisting of a carrier having a relatively small chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto, and concentric therewith, and a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed centrally in said chambers, and a compressible member having a part thereof fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a part thereof fitting within the relatively small chamber of the carrier, and having a bore adapted to receive the projection or stem of said carrier.
3. In a device of the class specified,tlie combination of a body having a valve-chamber, and also having induction and eduction passages, and a valve-seat intermediate thereof; a valve in said chamber consisting of a carrier having a tubular chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto, and concentric therewith, and a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed centrally in said chambers, a compressible member having a disk fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a tubular stem. fitting within the tubular chamber of the carrier, and adapted to receive the projection or stem of said carrier; and a valve-actuating member or spindle for operating said valve.
4:. In a device of the class specified,the combination of a body having a valve-chamber and also having induction and eduction passages, and a valve-seat intermediate thereof; a valve in said chamber consisting of a carrier having a tubular chamber, and an enlarged chamber concentric therewith, the juncture-wall of said chambers forming a shoulder, and a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed centrally in said chambers, and a compressible member comprising a disk fitting within said enlarged chamber and engaging the shoulder thereof, and a tubular stem fitting within the tubular chamber, and having its bore extending within the disk, and adapted to receive the downwardly-extending projection or stem of said carrier, whereby when said compressible member is compressed by engagement with 'the valve-seat, the material thereof will be caused to spread laterally, both inwardly and outwardly, and impinge against the projection or stem of said carrier.
5. A valve consisting of a carrier having a tubular chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto and concentric therewith, a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed in said chambers, and a compressible member having a disk fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a tubular stem fitting within the tubular chamber of the carrier, and adapted to receive the projection or stem of said carrier.
6. In a faucet or cock, the combination of a body having a valve-chamber, and also having induction and eduction passages, and having a valve-seat intermediate thereof; a non-rotatable bored and interiorly-threaded member removably disposed in said valvechamber; a valve having a threaded spindle engaging the threads of the non-rotatable member, said valve comprising a carrier integral with said spindle and having a relatively small chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto and concentric therewith, and a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed centrally in said chambers, and a compressible member having a part thereof fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a part thereof fitting within the relatively small chamber of the carrier, and having a bore adapted to receive the projection or stem of said carrier.
7. In a faucet or cock, the combination of a body having a valve-chamber open at its upper end, and also having induction and eduction passages, and having a valve-seat intermediate thereof; a non-rotatable bored and interiorly-threaded member removably disposed in said valve-chamber; a valve having a threaded spindle engaging the threads of the non-rotatable member, said valve comprising a carrier integral with said spindle and having a tubular chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto and concentric therewith, and a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed centrally in said chambers, a compressible member comprising a disk fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a tubular stem fitting within the tubular chamber of the carrier, and adapted to receive the projection or stem of said carrier; and a removable closure or cap closing the open end of said valve-chamber, and having a stuffing-box surrounding said spindle.
8. A valve consisting of a carrier having a relatively small chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto and concentric therewith, and a compressible member having a part thereof fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a part thereof fitting within the relatively small chamber.
9. A valve consisting of a carrier having a tubular chamber, an enlarged circular chamber adjacent thereto and concentric therewith, and a compressible member having a disk fitting within said enlarged chamber and a tubular stem fitting within the tubular chamber of the carrier.
10. A valve consisting of a carrier having a relatively small chamber, an enlarged chamber adjacent thereto, a downwardly-extending projection or stem disposed in said chamber, and a compressible member having a part thereof fitting within said enlarged chamber, and a part thereof fitting within the relatively small chamber of the carrier and havinga bore adapted to receive the projection or stem of said carrier.
