IMPROVEMENT IN RAI LPLOAD-LAM PS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,853, dated May 24, 1864.

To all zrzom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS 11ovER,of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad Lamps and Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and the letters and Ijgures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

In said drawings, which are hereunto annexed, Figure l represents a vertical central section of my invention; and Fig. 2 a top view of the same, the shade B being in section at the line x in Fig. 1.

The nature of my invention consists in a novel arrangement for raising and lowering the wick of the lamp or lantern without removing the shade or globe thereof', while at I the same time the lamp may be held in an up- Iight or vertical position when being attached to the shade or globe, and by a simple adjustment the connection with the Wick may be broken, so that without the proper readjustment the wick cannot be regulated or disturbed, thus preventing the intermeddling of persons who have no business with the lamps.

To enable those skilled in the art to under- I will proceed to describe the same with par ticularity.

A represents the lamp proper or oil-cup; B, the glass shade or protector; C, the mef tallic top or chimney; l), the metallic attachment to the base of the shade B, whereby slid shade is fastened to the lamp by means I of the springs F and projection lil; and G. is the wick-tube of the lamp. As all these parts have no particular reference to my invention,

and may be constructed in any of the known forms, no parlicnlar description is needed. I

The shaft a, upon which the rougbened wheels :r .r are tixed, terminates inside of the casing ot' the lamp or lantern, and is provided with a square head or button, as shown. The shaft b, provided with the button c for convenience in operatingthe same, passes through a I suitable opening in the casinginto the interior i it I and is provided upon the end, as shown, with a concave head adapted to receive the head upon the shaft a. The concave head upon b, however, is kept away from a by the operation of the spring d, arranged, as shown, between the exterior of the casing D and the button c.

For the purposeot' enabling the operator to adjust the two shafts a and b so as to connect with each other, the arm or projecting bar e is employed, being fixed to the casing D. When the'wick requires adjusting, the operator turns the lamp Within the casing from any position, as that indicated by the red lines in Fig. 2, until the bar or shaft a strikes against the arm e, when he presses the shaft b inward until the concave head thereof receives the head ot' a, and then bya rotary motion of b, the same motion is given to a, and the wick readily adjusted. By relieving the shaft I) from the pressure the spring d im'- mediately disconnects b from a, when the lamp may be moved back to the position shown by the aforesaid red lines, when the turning of the shaft I1 can have no effect upon the wick.

This Ainvention is equally applicable to lamps and lanterns.

Having described the construction and operation ot my invention, I will now specify what I claim therein and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the shaft a with the adjustable shaft I), constructed, arranged, and
