L. EHRLIOH. ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND GUTTER.
No. 428,473. Patented May 20, 1890 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO EHRLICH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGN OR TO THE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,473, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed July 27, 1888- Serial No. 281,166. (No model.)
chine for holding and cutting wrapping-paper,
r wherein the knife is automatically fed or held against the roll of paper as the the latter decreases in size as the paper is removed for use. Hy invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a suitable base, to which are secured end supports or standards 2. These standards have forks 3 at their upper ends, 2 5 which receive the gudgeons or journals 4: of the roller 5, upon which the paper 6 is wound. The standards are further provided with extensions 7 to which are pivoted arms or levers 8, preferably made in crescent form, as shown 0 in Fig. II. To the outer ends of these arms the knife 9 is secured, one end of the knife being secured to one of the arms at one end of the roll and the other end of the knife being secured to the other arm at the other end 3 5 of the roll, so as to cross in front of the roll, as shown in Fig. I. On the inner ends of the arms are weights, these weights acting to hold the knife against the roll of paper, the arms turning on their pivots 11 as the paper is removed and the size of the roll decreased, and in this way the knife is held constantly against the roll, automatically moving from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. II to the position shown in full lines, Fig. II, and from the latter position still further toward the roll 5 as the size of the roll of paper is decreased.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the roll of paper, pivoted arms, knife secured to the arms at one side of the pivot, and the weights secured to the arms at the other side of the pivot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a suitable support for a roll of paper, of arms pivoted to the support, having a knife secured to their outer ends, and weights secured to their inner ends adapted to hold the knife in contact with the roll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the base, standards secured to the base, roller having journals fitting in notches in the standards, paper on the roller, arms pivoted to the standards, knife secured to the outer ends of the arms, and 6 5 weights on the inner ends of the arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth 4. The combination of the standards, roll of paper supported by the standards, curved arms pivoted to said standards and weighted 70 at their inner ends, and a knife mounted upon the outer ends of said arms and held against the roll of paper by said weights, sub- "stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LEO EHRLICH.
