SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,271, dated May 20, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, VLADIMIR E. GER- vENY and JOSEPH NowAK, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Trousers, of which the following is a specilication.

The object of our improvement is to provide means for snugly supporting trousers at the waist without the use of the strap and buckle commonly provided for the purpose, and which shall render the use of Suspenders unnecessary; and we accomplish our object by providing pockets in the waistband at opposite sides of the slit, inserting into each pocket one end of an elastic band, which thus extends across the slit, and fastening the band in the pockets near the extremities of its ends, thus leaving its intermediate portion between the inner ends of the pockets free, and thereby permitting` the full expansive quality of the band to be utilized.

In dispensing with the use of the ordinary strap and buckle for producing snug fit of trousers around the waist of the wearer and substituting our improvement the shape of the trousers is improved, and, besides, an important sanitary purpose is subserved, inasmuch as the ordinarily-employed means referred to impedes ready expansion of the stomach, as in breathing and eating, while Suspenders interfere with desired freedom in the movements of the body.

By means of our improvement, which enables the trousers to be snugly and iirmly supported without Suspenders, the yielding nature of the support permits the waistband to conform to the waist of the wearer practically without vobstruction to expansion and contraction of the stomach.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in rear elevation of the upper portion of a pair of trousers provided with our iinprovement; Fig. 2, abroken view in elevation showing a rear portion of the waistband and regarded from the front of the trousers; Fig. 3, a view similar to that presented in Fig. l, but broken, and showing the elastic supporting-band stretched; and Fig. 4, a section taken on the line 4t 4 of Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrows.

A denotes a pair of trousers, provided in its back with the usual slit fr, extending through the waistband o, and the edges of which may be connected, as commonly, with the puff q. In the waistband owe provide, lengthwise thereof, at each side of the slit 1^, and extending several inches, (about four, preferably,) a pocket p.

B is the elastic supporting medium, comprising a band of elastic material (web) extended at opposite ends into the pockets p, and secured therein near its extremities, as shown at preferably by stitching. The preferred length of the elastic band B is about nine inches, and being secured near its ends, leaving the intermediate portion free to be stretched and to contract, it will readily be seen that the waistband is caused by thel band B to fit snugly around the waist of the wearer, and yieldingly in a sufcient degree to permit the waistband to be stretched easily, thus adding materially to the comfort of the wearer. Furthermore, the pocket p by enveloping the elastic-band connection conceals it and obviates detraction from the appearance of the trousers, and thereby from their salableness.

Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-` In combination with a pair of trousers hav= ing the slit 7 in the back, provided on the inside of the trousers with the puff q, pockets p, formed in the waistband at opposite sides ofthe slit, and an elastic band B, inserted at n opposite ends in said pockets and permanently secured therein near its ends, and of a length to maintain the edges of the slit r, which it crosses, normally together, whereby the band B is held normally out of sight, and whereby the intermediate unsecured portion of the elastic band is free to be stretched to permit expansion of the waistband beyond its normal circumference, and is saved from contact with the body of the wearer at all times, as and for the purpose set forth.
