WILLIAM HENRY BARBER, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HOLDING BITS AND OTHER TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,827, dated May 24, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY BAR- BER, of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful instrument for holding bits and other tools securely without fitting the same to the holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The instrument or holder consists of a center piece, (marked A,) twojaws, (marked B and B,) a screw or nut, (marked 0,) and a spiral spring, (marked D.)
Figure 1 represents the instrument or holder with the bit or other tool inserted and ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the position of the spiral spring with the screw or nut O and the jaws B and- B removed. Fig. 3 shows the position of the jaws when ready to receive the tool, with the screw or nut (J removed. Fig. 4 shows a back view, Fig. 5 a side view, and Fig. 6 a top or end view, of one of the jaws. Fig. 7 shows an end View of the instrument or holder with the screw or nut removed. Fig.
il IIII 8 represents the inside, and Fig. 9 the outside,
of the screw or nut.
The object of the spiral spring is to open and force outward the jaws When the pressure occasioned by turning the screw or nut down is removed.
When the bit is inserted in the socket E, by turning the nut or screw 0 the jaws B B grasp the bit above the tang or square part, bring the same into the center, and at the same time thejaws are moved longitudinally or lengthwise, by which mOtion the bit is pressed firmly into the socket, in which position it is securely held, and from which it cannot be taken or removed till the nut or screw is turned back.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The shape of the graspingjaws B B and the pressing of the bit into the socket by means of the longitudinal motion of said jaws, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth.
WM. HENRY BARBER.
In presence of- AUSTIN DE WOLF, WENDELL T. DAVIS.
