Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS ALOAN, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
NAILlNG WOODEN SOLES TO BOQTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,825, dated May 24, 1564.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs ALCAN, of Newport, Campbell county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vooden-Soled Boots and Shoes; -and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref'erencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the class ot' boots and shoes having wooden soles and leather uppers; and my invention consists in a mode of joining the leather to the wooden portion, which serves bf th to insure a tight joint and to hide the nail-heads, so as to present a more sightly appearance than the customary forms.
Figure 1 shows a wooden sole rabbeted to receive the leather. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe same, with the leather portion exhibited in section.
The sole A is formed of beech ,er other tough wood, and receives around the upper portion of its edge, a very much undercut rabbet, a.
The front B is shived ott' at its lower edge,
In mi b, and is so nailed to the rabbet side as to leave the shived portion projecting below the nails. This shived portion, being afterward crimped up under pressure so as to assume the form in Fig. 2, acts to close the joint and at the saine time to hide the nail-heads.
The heel-piece O is nailed to the rabbet with its bottom edge, c, uppermost, and is afterward bent up, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as new- 1. An improved manufacture of woodensoled boots and shoes, Ithe mode of secret nailing the front B b to an undercut rabbet, a, and crimping the lower edge, b, of the front upwardly over the nail-heads n, in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
 2. The mode herein described of secret nailing the heel-piece C c to the undercut rabbet a of the wooden sole A.
In testimony ot' which invention I hereunto set my hand.
LOUIS ALCAN.
