MAI L-BAG STAPLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 'itlo. 427,923, dated May 13, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRIEND W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Bag Staples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of staples for use in connection with mailbags or otherwise, and has for its object to greatly cheapen the manufacture of such articles and at the same time to afford a very strong and superior staple.

With these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically designated by the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved staple; Fig. 2,a sectional view showing the manner of securing my staple.

A is the body of the staple, and B the rivetshoulder. Heretoforo the ends of the staple have been turned or milled down in order to form this shoulder; but, in order to permit of th1s,,,very heavy wire had to be used, and

this materially increased the weight of a mail-bag. Again, the turning or milling down of the staple-ends to form the shoulder is an operation both tedious and expensive, and the object of my present invention is to produce a more desirable article at a less cost. The shoulder B is swaged up from the wire which forms the stock of the staple-body, thus affording a staple of uniform gage throughout on each side of the shoulders. I form the upper face of the shoulder with a re-enforce a, in order to afford great strength.

It is in connection with amail-bag that the great advantage of my staple asserts itself, for the metal-bound locking-strap of the bag does not dragon the latter, but upon the upper surfaces of the shoulders B, thus in a great measure obviating the wear on the bag.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A staple made from wire having near the ends peripheral shoulders swaged up from the stock of the staple, the latter being of uniform gage throughout on both sides of said shoulders, substantially as set forth.
