On the shaft G, near its middle, is secured a bevel gear-wheel I, adapted to mesh into a bevel gear-Wheel J when the shaft G is in its left-hand position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The gear-wheel J is fastened on the upper end of the shaftK, mounted to turn in a bearing F of .the frame F, and carrying at its lower end a chuck L, supporting the auger N, preferably of the construction shown and described in Letters Patent numbered 306,907, granted to Charles H. Irwin October 21, 1884. \Vhen the machine is in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5 and the shaft G is revolved by the operator turning the crank-arms G and G then the small bevel gear-wheel I, meshing into the small bevel gear-wheel J, turns the shaft K at a high rate of speed to drill small holes with angers of small diameter. Now when the operator desires to use a large anger the speed of the machine must necessarily be reduced. For this purpose the latch II is disengaged from the shaft G, the latter is shifted to the right, and the latch H is placed into contact with the shaft G to lock the latterin its right-hand position. The
shifting of the shaft G from the left to the right moves the clutch-teeth of the gear-wheel 1 into engagement of the clutch-teeth N of the smaller gear-wheel N, so that when the shaft is now rotated the gear-wheel N rotates with the said shaft, as it is coupled to the gear-Wheel I. The latter, by shifting the shaft G to the right, is disengaged from the smaller bevel gear-wheel J, and now on turning the shaft G its motion is transmitted by means of the gear-wheel N to the large bevel gearwheel 0, secured on the shaft K, which is thus turned at a low rate of speed. Thus by simply shifting the shaft G a fast or a slow motion can be given to the shaft K during the same number of revolutions imparted to the shaft G. WVhen the aperture is bored by 1he auger N and the operator desires to withdraw the auger, the following device is used to quickly raise the frame F to move the auger out of the aperture: On the bevel gearwheel N is formed a spu r-wheel N adapted to be engaged by a rack P, mounted to slide on one of the posts E, so as to engage and disengage the said spur-wheel N Whenever desired. The rack P is provided ncarits upper end with an inclined slot P, engaging a bolt Q, held 011 the respective post E. On the lower end a similar arrangement may be made,
or a pin P may be secured to the rack P to engage the slot E, formed in the respective post E and inclined similarly to the slot P. On the extreme lower end of the rack P is arranged a forwardly-inclined arm P passing through a keeper R and provided with a hook- P, adapted to engage the top of the keeper R when the rack P is moved upward, so as to slide rearward out of contact with the spur-wheel N and then the hook P rests on top of the keeper R and locks the rack P in position-that is, out of contact with the spurwheel N Then the operator desires to move the frame F upward after the hole is drilled, the rack P is swung downward and outward by the operator disengaging the hook P from the keeper R and permitting the rack to slide downward and outward in mesh with the spur-wheel N The operator then, turning the shaft G in the reverse direction, causes the said spur-wheel N 2 to travel upward on the rack P, thus raising the frame and shifting the auger N out of the drill-hole.
It will be seen that in order to change the machine from a slow to a fast motion, or vice versa, it is necessary to shift one of the shafts. This can also be accomplished as shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10, in which the shaft G is mounted to turn, but not to slide, and the bevel gear-wheel N is formed integral with the gearvheel I, secured on the shaft G. The bevel gear-wheel J is not formed integral with the gear-wheel 0, but is provided with clutch-teeth J adapted to engage correspondloosely on the hub of the gear-wheel J, while said gear-wheel J is fastened on the shaft K and rests on the sleeve J, held to slide vertically in the bearing F. A pin S projects from the sleeve J through a slot F in the bearing F and this pin is adapted to be locked in an uppermost position by a latch S, so as to hold the sleeve J in an uppermost position and the gear-wheel J in mesh with the gear-wheel I. The gear-wheels J and O are thus disconnected, and the gear-wheel O rotates loosely when the shaft G is turned. A fast motion is thus imparted to the shaft K, as the motion of the shaft G is transmitted by the gear-wheel I to the gear-wheel J on the said shaft K. hen the latch S is thrown over the pin S, the sleeve J and the gear-wheel J are permitted to slide downward, so that the clutch-teeth J engage the clutchteeth 0 of the gear-wheel O, at the same time disengaging the gear-Wheel J from the gear-wheel I. Motion is now transmitted from the gear-wheel N to the gear-wheel O, which, being locked to the gear-wheel J, imparts a slow motion to the shaft K. This construction is similar to the one above described and is for the same purpose. Thus it will be seen that by a simple movement the speed of the machine can be quickly changed accord ing to the size of the gear used, and the auger can be quickly withdrawn from the hole.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a boring-machine, the combination, with a shaft mounted to turn and to be shifted lengthwise and two gear-wheels, of which one is fastened and the other is loose on the shaft, of a second shaft mounted to turn and carrying two integral gear-wheels adapted to engage the said fast and loose gear-wheels, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a boring-machine, the combination, with a shaft mounted to turn and to be shifted lengthwise and two gear-wheels, of which one is fastened and the other is loose, of a second shaft mounted to turn and' carrying two integral gear-wheels adapted to engage the said fast and loose gear-wheels, and means, substantially as described, for locking the shaft to be shifted in position, permitting it, however, to turn, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a boring-machine, the combination, with posts, of a frame mounted to slide on the said posts, a shaft held to turn and adapted to be shifted in the said frame, a bevel gearwheel having clutch-teeth secured on the said shaft, a second bevel gear-wheel held loose on the said shaft and adapted to be engaged by the said first-named bevel gear-wheel,two integral gear-wheels of different diameter and adapted to mesh in the said gear-wheels on the said shaft, and a second shaft held at right angles to the said first-named shaft and carrying the said two integral gear-wheels, sub stantially as shown and described.
4. In a boring-machine, the combination, with posts, of a frame mounted to slide on the said posts, a shaft held to turn and adapted to be shifted in the said frame, a bevel gearwheel having clutch-teeth and secured on the said shaft, a second bevel gear-wheel held loose on the said shaft and adapted to be engaged by the said first-named bevel gearwheel, two integral gear-wheels of different diameter and adapted to mesh in the said gear-wheels on the said shaft, a second shaft held at right angles to the said first-named shaft and carrying the said two integral gearwheels, and a chuck held on the said lastnamed shaft for carrying the auger, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a boring-machine, the combination, with posts, of a frame mounted to slide on the said posts, a shaft held to turn and adapted to be shifted in the said frame, a bevel gear wheel having clutch-teeth and secured 011 the said shaft, a second bevel gear-wheel held loose on the said shaft and adapted to be engaged by the said first-named bevel gearwheel, two integral gear-wheels of different diameter and adapted to mesh in the said gear-wheels on the said shaft, a second shaft held at right angles to the said first-named shaft and carrying the said two integral gearwheels, and latches for alternately locking the first-named shaft in the right or left hand position, permitting the shaft, however, to turn in its bearings on the frame, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a boring-machine, the combination, with posts, of a frame mounted'to slide on the said posts, a shaft held to turn and adapted to be shifted in the said frame, a bevel gearwheel having clutch-teeth and secured on the said shaft, a second bevel gear-wheel held loose 011 the said shaft and adapted to be engaged by the said first-named bevel gearwheel, two integral gear-wheels of different diameter and adapted to mesh in the said gear-Wheels on the said shaft, a second shaft held at right angles to the said first-named shaft and carrying the said two integral gearwheels, and means, substantially as described, for locking the said posts in any desired position, as set forth.
7. In a boring-machine, the combination, with posts, of aframe mounted to slide on the said posts, a shaft held to turn and adapted to be shifted in the said frame, a bevel gearwheel having clutch-teeth and secured on the said shaft, a second bevel gear-wheel held loose on the said shaft and adapted to be engaged by the said first-named bevel gearwheel, two integral gear-wheels of different diameter and adapted to mesh in the said gear-wheels on the said shaft, a second shaft held at right angles to the said first-named shaft and carrying the said two integral gearwheels, an d means, substantially as described,
