Description

Improvement in Earth-Boring Machines.
Patented May 21,1872.

PATENT OFEIcE CHARLES VERNIER, OF STRYKER, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN EARTH-BORING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,194, dated 21, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, CHARLES VERNIER, of Stryker, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Boring Holes in the Ground for Setting Posts, of which the following is a specification.
I In construction of my machine I make any suitable frame, A, and attach thereto the handles B, for moving the machine. The feet 0 are made adjustable by means of slots D and crank-screws E, or other suitable means, for the purpose of leveling the machine upon side'- hill or other uneven ground. Within the frame is arranged an auger, F, which may be of any desired form. On the shaft F of the anger is a bevel gear-wheel, G, which is set in motion by two other bevel gear-wheels H,
- and the two hand-cranks I. A toothed bar,
K, and pinion, L, Fig. 2, are employed to feed the auger forward or withdraw the same, at pleasure. This feed is regulated or suspended by means of the lever M, in connection with c0g-wheel N, which is loose on its shaft, and
may be thrown in or out of gear, or locked and unlocked by means of the lever M and a pin,,S, which catches in a notch in the wheel N, and thus locks the latter when desired.
The crank-shaft P is divided, and the two parts are connected by a clutch, B. By this means the wheel H remains at rest when the crank is turned backward in order to raise or withdraw the auger, which is done by means of gear-wheels N and U, pinions T V and their connections, as seen in Fig. 2.
I do not claim the separate devices above described; but
I claim- The divided crank-shaft P, clutch R, gears G H H, and auger-shaft F, in combination with the pinions V T, gear U, notched-gear N, pin S, lever M, pinion L, and rack K, all constructed and operated as set forth.
CHARLES VERNIER.
