S. E. WARREN. CIGAR 0R TOBACCO BOX.
No. 427,285. Patented May 6,1890.
UNITED SAMUEL E. WARREN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGAR OR TOBACCO BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,285, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed February 10, 1890. Serial No. 339,886. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsbnrg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Tobacco Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved cigar or tobacco box; and it consists in a metallic base having an upwardly-extending portion adapted to form a moistener by filling the same with felt or other like material and keep the cigars or tobacco moist, together with certain other details of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective sectional view of a cigar-box, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the metallic base and moistener detached from the box.
To put my invention into practice I construct a box a of suitable size and provide the same with a metallic base I), which is secured to the sides by small nails or brads. This base 6 is provided at one edge with an upwardly-extending loop 0, in which is secured a strip of felt d, or other suitable porous substance. This upwardly extending loop a occupies a position along and in close contact with one side of the box a and extends the entire length and height of the said side. Formed in the inner surface of this loop 0 are a series of vertical slots f, through which the moisture from the felt d escapes into the box. In order to attach this metallic base b and moistener to the box a, I pro- -vide the same with a narrow flange 9, projecting from the base of the loop 0, and also form the base I) somewhat longer than the loop 0, which will permit the same to rest on 4 the ends of the box a, while the loop 0 occupies a position inside.
In packing cigars in the above-described box a, I prefer to place the open ends toward or against the moistener c, which will permit the moisture to easily penetrate the same.
After the cigars have been packed and the box sealed, stamped, &c., and it is desired to have the same remain moist, the box is inverted or turned bottom upward and a small quantity of water poured along the open end of the loop, which enters the felt d, saturates the same, and is slowly evaporated into the box a, thereby keeping the cigars or tobacco moist for a period of several months.
This box a, constructed as described, is es pecially useful when cigars or tobacco are stored away and allowed to remain in a dry atmosphere.
This invention may also be used to perfume the contents of the box by simply saturating the felt with a liquid perfume, which will e11- ter the box a through the openings and flavor the tobacco.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The herein-described. box, consisting of a metallic base having an upwardly-extending loop arranged along one side of the box, and a fibrous or porous filling adapted to contain water or other liquids, and a series of openings or perforations communicating with the interior of the box, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a cigar or tobacco box such as described, the combination consisting of the metallic base having an upwardly-extending loop, a porous substance secured in the said loop, a series of openings formed in the loop, and an outwardly-extending flange formed at the base of the same, whereby the bottom and moistener may be secured to the sides of the box, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 27th day of January, A. D. 1890.
SAMUEL E. WARREN [L.-s.]
In presence of JOHN G. THOMPSON, A. R. MoGAsLIN.
