Description

PATENT OFFICE.
T. DWIGHT HOTCHKISS, OF GUILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-WHEEL HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 42,66l. dated May 10, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T. DWIGHT HOTCH- KISS, of Guilford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Wheel Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speci cation, said drawing representing an elevation, partly in section, of a spinning-wheel head with my improvement. i
This invention consists in the substitution of springs for the adjusting-screws commonly employed fortighteningthe band which drives the spindle, whereby the tension ot' the said bandis adjusted automatically, and the necessity for manual adjustment is dispensed with.
A is the stock of the head, and B the pin attached thereto to secure it to the frame of the spinning-wheel. C is the spindle, and a a its bearings, constructed and attached to the stock A in t-he usual manner. D is the shaft on which is secured the pulley E, around which and the pulley G on the spindle runs the band b, which drives the spindle. The said shaft has also fast upon itthe usual pulley, F, which receives the band from the spinningwheel for driving the said shaft. H H are the standards which contain the bearings for the shaft D. The lower parts ot' these spindles are turned to lit easily into holes c c, bored through the stock A for their reception. The upper portions of these holes are made of larger size than the lower positions, to form l shoulders d d, which serve as bearings for the adjusting springs e c, and portions ot' the standards are turned to fit the upper andlarger portions of the said holes, and portions to lit the lower and smaller portions ot' the said holes having shoulders ff, to rest upon the said springs, which are of metal wire, and ot' spiral construction coiled around the standards, and applied between the shoulders d d and f f. These springs, acting upon the shoulders f f, exert a constant upward pressure upon the standards H, and keep the band b tight without any necessity for manual adjustment ofthe said standards, and the band b contines the said'standards in place.
India-rubber springs may be substituted for the spiral metal springs e e, or any other kind ot' metal springs may be used-as, forinstance, a single curved spring` so applied outside ot" the stock A as to exert an upward pressure upon both standards H H simultaneously.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
So applying a spring or springsin combination with the standards H H ot' a spinningwheel head as to exert an upward pressure on the said standards and preserve a proper tension of the band b without the use of screws or any other manual adjustment.
