A. E. GUY.
. MATCH BOX, 4 No. 425,608. Patented Apr. 15, 1890.
INVENTOR v WITNESSES: I H
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. GUY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,608, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed July 19, 1889. gerial No. 318,011. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. GUY, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved match-box which is provided with a sliding taper and with a sliding and folding supporting-stand by which the match-box can be changed into an illuminating device; and the invention consists of a match-box provided with two transverse partitions, one at each end, so as to be divided into three compartments, a middle compartmentfor matches, an end compartment for a sliding taper, and a second compartment for a sliding and folding supporting stand or tripod, which is formed of spring-wires that are secured to a,
socket which is guided by a handle in the slotted end wall of the match-box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved match-box, taken online a" m, Fig. 2, showing the match-box arranged as a support for a wax taper for illuminating purposes. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are respectively a side elevation and end elevation of the match-box, taken from opposite ends.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the outer casing of my improved match-box, which is made of the usual size and shape and provided near both ends with transverse partitions at, which partitions are slightly curved for serving in connection with the end walls as guides for a socket 19, into which a taper B is placed, and of a socket d, to which a folding supportingstand D is applied. The socket b of the taper B is provided with a headed stud h, which is guided in a slot 19 at one end of the casing A, while the socket d is provided with a stud d, which is guided in a slot d of the opposite end of the casing A. The slot (Z has a rectangular extension (1 at each end, by which the socket of the folding supporting-stand D can be retained in its outermost or innermost position, as shown,
respectively, in Figs. 1 and 4.
The supporting-stand D is formed of three spring-legs, of which two are made longer than the third, the longer legs extending beyond the center of gravity of the match-box, and form thereby, with the short leg, a firm stand or tripod for the same when the taper is extended and lighted, so that the whole forms an illuminating device, as shown in Fig. 1.
The middle compartment, which contains the matches, is closed by a hinged lid e, while the end compartment containing the taper is closed by a hinged lid f. The outer surface of the bottom of the match-box is roughened, so as to provide afriction-surface for lighting the matches.
The device forms a neat combination of match-box and illuminating device, which is of great convenience in the city and country whenever-it is desired to make a light either for lighting cigars in a social circle or when coming home late at night or for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a match-box having transverse partitions near the ends, so as to form a central compartment for the matches and end compartments with a sliding and guided taper in one end compartment and a sliding and folding supporting-stand in the other compartment, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the casing of a match-box havin transverse partitions near its end, so as to form a middle compartment for the matches and end compartments, respectively, for the taper and supporting-stand, the end walls being provided with longitudinal slots, of a sliding taper-supporting socket having a headed stud and a sliding socket having a headed stud and folding spring-legs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT E. GUY.
