Description

M0de 1 V,
E. GILLIS.
NEGATIVE HOLDER No. 425,420. Patented Apr. 15,1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWVIN GILLIS, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES XV. STRUTHERS, OE SAME PLACE.
NEGATIVE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 42 5,420, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed April 25, 1889. Serial No. 308,537. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EDWIN GILLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a' new and useful Photographers Apparatus for Fixing Negatives, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a frame for holding negatives and to mount [0 the same in a tank for holding the liquid in a manner that the frame may be oscillated or tilted from a vertical to a horizontal angle, and vice versa, substantially as below set forth, and for the purpose stated.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation through the tank.
Referring tothe letters of reference marked on the drawings, Ais the tank for holding the liquid or solution into which the negatives are to be immersed for fixing them. This tank may be made of any suitable material, and with or without acover, as desired.
The open frame B has a series of grooves or channels 6 at the two opposite sides and the negatives c are inserted in said channels and they are thus held disconnected from each other.
The frame 13 may be made so as to hold negatives c of different widths byhaving compartments in said frame of different sizes, two being shown in Fig. 1, or the frame may be made to hold only one size negative. The
3 5 negatives rest on the bottom strip S when in a vertical position or out of the liquid.
The frame B has a crank-shaft R attached to it, and this shaft has bearings in the sides of the tank A, as in the drawings, or in any suitable way, so that by turning the crankshaft R the frame B and its contents are tilted from the position in Figs. 1 and 2, which is vertical or upright, to the horizontal position into the fixing-liquid. (Shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.) At 1; is a spring-catch for engaging the crank to hold the frame in its upright position out of the liquid.
Such an apparatus may be employed for bathing and washing the negatives as well as fixing them. The frame being skeleton in form or open, the liquid willnot be dipped up by it when raising it to the upright position out of the liquid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination of a tank and the open frame having the grooved sides and bottom strip, said frame having atone side oscillating bearings in said tank, whereby said frame can be tilted into and out of the liquid, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a tank for holding the liquid, the open frame for holding the negatives, the crank-shaft attached to said frame and having oscillating bearings in said frame, and a suitable latch to engage the crank to hold the frame in an upright position, sub stantially as set forth.
I11 testimony of theforegoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN GILLIS. Witnesses:
