UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN \V. BOUGHTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,290, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed December 16, 1889- Serial .No. 333,901. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BOUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Screens, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invent-ion consists of a screen formed of frames connected by straps or pieces of flexible material constituting hinges, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a screen embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 represent horizontal sections, looking upwardly, of a portion of the screen in different positions, said sections being on line mm, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring. to the drawings, A designates a screen formed of two or more frames B,which maybe placed angular-1y to each other and the screen folded and unfolded, as custoinary with articles of the class. The frames are connected by straps or pieces 0 of sheet metal, each of which is partly wound around standards or sides of adjacent frames, and having their ends secured to the same by nails, screws, or other fastenings, it being noticed that the straps are in pairs, the members whereof are wound around the standards in reverse directions. It will be seen that when the frames are turned for adj usting the same in angular positions or for purposes of folding or unfolding (or closing or opening) the screen one strip unwinds from one stand ard and winds on the other standard thus preserving the connection of the frames, and
admitting of the movements of said frames with all the advantages of hinges heretofore employed Without the expensiveness of the same, thus producing an efficient and cheap article of the kind. I
\Vhile I have specified the straps C as of sheet metal, it is evident that any other suitable flexible or elastic material may be substituted for the same.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A screen-frame having the adjacent sides thereof connected by straps whose ends are bent in opposite directions and secured to the said sides of the frame and adapted to wind thereon and unwind therefrom in. reverse directions, substantially as described.
2. A screen-frame having the adjacent sides thereof connected by spring-straps arranged in pairs, whose ends are bent in opposite directions and secured to the said sides of the frame and adapted to wind thereon and unwind therefrom in reverse directions, substantially as described.
JOHN XV. BOUGHTON. \Vitnesses:
JOHN A. W'rnonnsnnrn, WM. W IEDERSHEIM.
