To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Isaac E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Unitary Screens, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on .the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to unitary screens, preferably composed of woven, open mesh textile material and adapted to be sold or used in its entirety or in divisible or segregable portions thereof as desired, and is an improvement upon my Patent No. 1,023,094, dated April 5), 1912.

In order that the principle of the invention may readily be understood, I have disclosed a single embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

In accordance with my invention, and as set forth in my said patent, I provide a screen of suitable material such, for eX- ample as an open mesh, woven fabric, generally similar it may be to what is known and preferably woven of a strong material and customarily employed for such purpose.

The term screen is herein employed in a generic sense as the screen need not necessarily be of open mesh material but may be closely woven or otherwise suitably formed so as to be available as an interior partition or for similar purposes. A very important use of my invention however. is as a orch or veranda screen and that use only thereof I have herein illustrated and shall describe. The material is preferably woven as an open mesh fabric of wide dimensions, as for example one hundred inches in width, and

of indefinite length, though if desired. the screen may be formed in relatively short lengths to be sold without cutting.

or if desired, in any suitable division thereof as fully set forth in my said patent. In either case I provide the screen 1 with suitable supporting or holding means at its upper and lower edges, such securing or holding means herein consisting of pockets 2, 3 which may be formed as liems and adapted to receive slats l, 5. The slats are preferably sectional, as set forth in my said patent, and as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, each slat section preferably terminating along a desired line of fold of the screen or along a line of division thereof, thus permitting the screen, if sold in its entire width or in a width greater than a single section of the slat, to be folded in a smaller compass. If desired, however, each of the slats 4i, 5 may be unitary.

Each of the slats t, 5 is adapted to be secured fiatwise against the support which may be a portion of the framing of the veranda. In Fig. 4 I have represented the upper slat 4 as positioned flatwise against the support 6 and as secured thereto by suitable screw or pin means herein represented as a series of screw eyes 7 passing through suitable holes in the slats 4: which are provided for this purpose prior to the insertion of the slat in the hem or pocket of the screen. If desired, I may employ a washer 8 at the outer face of the slat and pocket to prevent tearing of the screen.

I have herein represented the lower slat 5 as positioned fiatwise against the support 9 and herein in a position at right angles to the position of the slat a. The slat 5 is similarly held in position by screw eyes 10 or other like means and I have herein represented washers 11 to prevent tearing of the screen.

An important purpose of my invention is to provide suitable means to prevent undue bagging of the screen under wind pressure and for that purpose I have herein provided one or more flexible strips, strands or cords 12 at the outer face of the screen. Preferably also, I provide a similar strip, cord or strand 13 at the opposite face of the screen. The said cords 12 and 13 may be secured in position in any suitable manner. I have herein represented two cords 12, 12' positioned at the outer face of the screen. One end of the cord 12 is secured to the upper corner screw eye 7 and. is then passed obliquely downwardly through the second.

screw eye 10 of the lower slat 5, the said cord 12 being thus reeved back and forth in a Zigzag direction through. alternate screw eyes 7 and 10, the end of the cord being herein represented as secured to the right hand end screw eye 10. The cord 12 has one end thereof secured to the lower left corner screw eye 10 and is reeved back and forth in a Zigzag direction, crossing the cord 12 at about mid-height the screen, the end of the said cord being secured to the upper cornerniost screw eye 7. Obviously, however, the flexible cords, strands or strips may be supported in any suitable manner so as to extend across the face of the screen and prevent undue bagging thereof.

Preferably I provide one or more cords, strands or strips at the opposite face of the screen and for that purpose have provided one or more strands 13 which are reeved in a corresponding manner back and forth through screw eyes 14, 15 which penetrate the slats at, 5 at an edge thereof, as clearly indicated in F 1g. 4%.. Preferably also, washers 16 are provided to prevent tearing of the screen. If desired, 1 may provide means such as supplemental cords 17 which penetrate the screen body 1 and secure together the strands 1Q, 12 and 13 at the points where strands or sections of the strands on one face cross each other.

It is to be understood that the screen may be sold in any suitable width and that the unitary or sectional slats 4-, 5 are intended to be readily secured in position against any suitable receiving surface. The screen of my invention is therefore particularly adapted for use in connection with verandas or porches and may be employed in extreme widths to screen off any length of porch. @wing to the fact that the screen must, therefore, necessarily in many cases be of very considerable height and width, it is a matter of great importance that suitable means may be provided to prevent undue bagging of the screen under wind pressure, or from other cause. This result is readily secured by the cords herein described and which can be readily applied to the screen after it has been positioned. Within the scope of the invention, however, I may use other suitable means to prevent bagging of the screen as for example, wires reeved back and forth in a manner described, or separate wire links which may be individually secured to suitable screw eyes at the upper and lower edges of the screen. Furthermore, within the scope of the invention the anti-bagging means may extend more or less transversely across the face or faces of the screen instead of substantially vertical as herein represented.

I have found the provision of flexible ant-i bagging means to be particularly serviceable because of the ease with which the masons same may be transported with the screen and also because of the ease with which the same may be applied to the face or faces of the screen.

The screen may, if desired, be provided with slats along its vertical edges and to that end may be provided thereat with heins or pockets for the reception of such slats. Furthermore, the screen may be provided, if desired, with an applied or inserted slat extending transversely across the same at a suitable distance from either the top or the bottom of the screen as when it is desired to provide the screen with a dado, so-called, which may be separated from the body or plain portion of the screen by one or more such transverse slats.

Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for the purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.

Claims:

1. An article of manufacture consisting of a unitary screen provided with upper and lower slats adapted. to be secured against a suitable support, and one or more flexible positioning strips secured to said slats adjacent a. face of the screen and extending thereacross to prevent undue bagging of the screen.

2. An article of manufacture consisting of a unitary screen provided with slats having holding means penetrating the same to secure the slats in position, and flexible positioning strips connected to said holding means and crossing the face of the screen, to prevent undue bagging thereof.

3, An article of manufacture consisting of a unitary screen provided with upper and lower slats adapted to be secured against a suitable support, holding means for detachably securing said slats to a suitable sup port, and cords or strands engaging the screen-holding means and drawn back and forth across a face of the screen, to prevent undue bagging thereof.

4. A unitary screen provided with edge slats, screw eyes to support said slats in position, and strands reeved back and forth across both faces of the screen, to prevent undue bagging thereof.

A unitary screen provided with securing slats, headed means penetrating the slats to support them in position, strands reeved back and forth across both faces of the screen, and means penetrating the screen to secure together the strands at opposite faces of the screen.

6. A unitary screen having pockets at the upper and lower edges, slats in said pockets positioned flatwise against their support and at right angles to each other, screw eyes to secure the slats in the defined position, cords name to this specification, in the presence reeved back and forth through the screw of two subscribing witnesses. eyes across one face of the screen screw eyes secured in the slats at the opposite face of ISAAC PALMER the screen and cords reeved back and forth through said latter screw eyes.
