UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. \VARLAND, OF PAWVTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, ADMINISTRATOR OF ISAAC LINDSLEY, DECEASED.
STRAW MATTING OR SIMILAR FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,090, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed October 14, 1889.
according to the improvement, a portion of the filling being left open to show the manner of weaving. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the same, showing modifications in the selvage, the filling being all. left open to show the manner of Weaving. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the curved filling-strips and the straightly-drawn main warpthreads. Fig. 4;is an enlarged longitudinal section showing the relative position and arrangement of the straightly-drawn main warp-threads of the selvage and the curved binding warp-threads at the side of the straightly-drawn main warpthreads.
Heretofore in the manufacture of straw matting and similar fabrics it has been customary to turn the end of each alternate filling-strip backward over the fabric to form a selvage; but when so turned the edge of the fabric was necessarily thickened, and thus rendered liable to rapid wear'by projecting above the general surface of the matting when laid upon the floor; and it is the object of this improvement to produce a practically-bound selvage upon such fabrics without producing the thickened ridge at the edge of the fabric, as when the alternate filling-strips are turned backward over the fabric and secured in position by means of a main warp-thread, as heretofore.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a piece of straw matting having opposite selvages b b. c c c are the main warpthreads, which are preferably made of larger size than the binding warp-threads (l, and c e Serial No. 327,004. (No model.)
are the filling straws or strips. The warpthreads 0 c are so drawn that they will have a practically straight direction through the fabric, the filling-strips e e curving over and under the same, as shown in the section,Fig.
3, while the binding warp-threads will lie alongside of the outer main warp-thread c, and instead of lying straight in the fabric will curve over and under the filling-strips e e, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the curved bindingwarp-threads d willbe considerably longer when extended than the straightly-drawn main warp-thread c.
In weaving the selvage in accordance with this improvement a single binding warpt-hread cl may be employed, as shown at the selvage b in Fig. 1; or two or more binding warp-threads d may be employed at opposite sides of the main war -thread 0, as shown at the opposite selvage b and instead of applying the binding warp-thread to the outer main 7o warp-thread alone the same can also be applied to an adjoining inner main warp-thread c, as shown at the selvage b in Fig. 2.
In weaving the selvage for what is known as three-leaf twill, in which three harnesses are employed, two or more binding warpthreads are employed at the side of the main warp-thread, in order to properly fasten all of the filling-strips, such an arrangement of warpthreads being shown at the selvage b in Fig. 2, in which the binding warp-threads d d are made to pass the one over and the other nnder the filling-strips at the side of the warpthread 0.
hat is claimed is 1. In the selvage of straw matting or similar fabric, the combination, with the fillingstrips and a straightly-drawn main warpthread which causes the bending of the filling-strips, of a curved binding warp-thread 0 which is contiguous to the main warp-thread and is curvedback and forth'around the opposite filling-strips to bind the same against the main warp-thread, substantially as described.
2. In the selvage of straw matting or similar fabric, the combination, with the fillingstrips and a straightly-drawn main warpthread which causes the bending of the filling-strips, of a binding Warp-thread which curves back and forth around the opposite filling-strips to bind the same against the main warp-thread, substantially as described.
3. In the selvage of straw matting 0r similar fabric, the combination, with the filling strips and a straightly-drawn main Warp thread which causes the bending of the fill- 1o ing-strips of duplicate-curved binding warpthreads at the side of the main warp-thread, the one passing over and the other under each filling-strip, substantially as described.
