IMPRCVEMENT IN CHlMNEY-CAP-S.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 42,4196, dated April 26, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. MAN, of Test Greenville, Mercer county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in ornamental chimney-tops for protecting and preserving the tops of chimneys from the effects ofthe weather; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a pazt of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the shape and construction of a solid casting of clay or metal chimney-top, with apertures to conduct the water from the inside of the chimney.
To enable' others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its shape and construction.
Figure 1 represents a top view, Fig. 2, a cross-section.
A represents the square frame or box part that lits over the top and sides of a chimney, extending over the outsides, protecting the top of the chimney from the effects ofthe weather and binding and supporting Jthe brick-work for the depth of four or more inches, as may be required, and preserving vthe chimney for years, which is otherwise invariably injured 'oy the frost and weather, so that the mortar crumbles away and the bricks fall off and require frequent repairing or rebuilding. Upon this box part Ais aplate, B, straight and tlat at the bottom and sloping at top, sloping from the center to the sides, and this plate B covers and fits flat upon the top of the brick-work, and is made on an inclined top for the purpose of conducting otf the rain through the apertures C at the out- Y side, that no waterl or frost can affect the brick-work and mortar at top. From the plate B the sides D curve outward, and upon these curved sides D rest square and straight sides E, that are scalloped in waving lines at top.
G is the opening or aperture the same size' of the inside of a chimney.
The Whole is made of one solid mold or casting of clay or metal of any required height, soA as to form an ornamental as well as highly useful and cheap top for chimneys for pr. tecting and preserving them from the eifects of the Weather, whether high or low chimneys, while their raised sides E also assist in increasing the draft of the chimneys.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe ornamental chimney-top, as herein described and for the purposes set forth, as an article of manufacture.
