E. B. BAILEY.
CHUCK JAWY. N0. 42 L698. Patented Apr. 1, 1890" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA B. BAILEY, OF WINDSOR LOCKS, CONNECTICUT.
CH UCK-JAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,698, dated April 1, 1890.
Application filed January 9, 1888. Serial No. 260,1i7. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EZRA 1-3. BAILEY, of
\Vindsor Locks, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Chuck- Jaws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
I My invention relates to the class of chucks that are adapted for use in holding articles with circular bounding-edges, as car-wheels and the like; and its object is to provide means that will prevent a car-wheel or like article from being pulled out from between the jaws while in process of manufacture.
To this end my improvement consists in the combination, with a chuck-j aw, of a clamp device with an arm overhanging the bite of the jaw, and also in the combination of the chuck-jaw with a clamp device having an arm overhanging the bite of the jaw and adjustable toward and from the face of the jaw; and it further consists in the details of the chuckjaw and the attachment and in their combination, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a chuck embodying my improvement, and shown as holding a car-wheel in position to be bored. Fig. 2 is a view, on enlarged scale, in vertical section through the chuck-j aw and attachment. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional View in part of Fig. 2.
t In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a chuck-body that may be of any one of the ordinary forms, having the three or more jaws I). These jaws b are arranged in the chuck-body in the usual manner, and are adapted to be fed toward and from the center of the chuck on radial lines by means of the feed-screw 0. Each of these jaws b is provided with the clamp (Z, that is held in the plane of the chuck-jaw by a tenon that fits into and interlocks with a socket on the outer edge I) of the chuck-jaw. This clamp d has a projecting part or arm (1', that overhangs or projects inward beyond the bite b of the aw.
tion of the bite of the jaw is that the tendency is to force the car-wheel away from the face of the chuck-body, and when such a tendency is aided by the boring or cutting tool that is being used on the wheel while it is held in the chuck the former is liable to be pulled out of the grasp of the chuck-jaws. The clamp 61 is secured to the chuck-jaw b by means of the interlocking tenon and socket, and also by means of the feed-screw e, that passes through the body of the clamp and takes into a threaded socket in the jaw, as clearly shown in the sectional view in the drawings. By means of this clamp feedscrew the clamp is moved toward and from the face of the chuck-body, and it may be made to grasp the edge of the flange of a wheel in such manner as to effectually prevent the car-wheel from being drawn out of the grasp of the chuckjaws.
The head of the adjust-ing-scrc\\-' may be either knurled, as shown, capstan-hcaded, or squared to receive a wrench.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In combination with a chuck-j aw, a clamp borne thereon and having an arm in part overhanging the bite of the jaw, and the means, substantially as described, whereby the clamp is secured to the chuck-jaw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a chuck-jaw having the inclined bite or grasping-face and clamp attached thereto by means of an interlocking tenon and socket, an adjusting or feed screw, the said clamp having a part that overhangs or projects beyond the grasping-face or bite of the chuck-jaw, all substantially as described.
EZRA B. BAILEY.
