CHUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 1o, 1905.
Application filed May 22,1905, Serial No. 261,668.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, YBevor M. W. HANsoN, (who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States,) residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chucks, and has for its object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which will be of simple construction and of great grasping power.
A further object of the invention is the provision of achuck having jaws with conical outer surfaces, a cone-sleeve fitted over said jaws, toggles or struts in engagement at their ends with the cone-sleeve and at their opposite ends with an adjustable abutment, and a sliding sleeve for actuating said struts.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a chuck composed of few parts and of compact and strong construction, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of the improved chuck, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Like numerals designate similar parts throughout both the views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the spindle, which is provided with a circumferential ange 6 and is externally threaded at its inner end, as at 7, to receive the chambered chuck-body 8, provided with tool-recesses 9, in which a tool may be inserted for attaching it to and detaching it from the spindle, said chuck-body being rabbeted at 10 to fit over the collar 6 and having a stop-flange 11. Slots 12 are formed at intervals in a forward extension 8 of the chuck-body, and said extension is reduced and externally threaded at 82 for the reception of a cap 13, having Spanner-recesses 13.
Designated by 14 are the jaws, each consisting of a segment having a conical periphery and each being rabbeted at its forward end at 14 to form a stop 142, which bears against the cap. Surrounding the conical exterior surfaces of the chuck-jaws is a jawactuating sleeve 15, having a conical interior surface to lit the corresponding surfaces of the jaws, and in the periphery of said sleeve is a series of seats 15 for the reception of the rounded inner ends of struts or toggle-levers 16. These struts are of wedge shape, and the head of each is provided with a straight surface 16 on one edge and with a like surface 162 at its thicker end, as shown in Fig. 2.
Designated by 17 is a sliding sleeve which is fitted over the chuck-body and is provided with an inclined inner surface 18, terminating in a cylindrical surface 19 for engaging the like surfaces 16 of the struts or toggles 16.
In the operation of the chuck power is applied to the sleeve 17, and as said sleeve is moved rearward the surface 18 thereof will engage the struts or toggles in the manner described, will force them toward a straight position, and will cause their inner ends to advance the jaw-actuating sleeve 15 and close the jaws upon the work. At the end of its rearward movement the sleeve 17 engages the stop-flange 11, and the cylindrical surface 19 of said sleeve engages the like parts 16 of the struts and locks them against receding movement, while the straight portion 162 bears against a like part 20 of the chuck-body, the two surfaces acting as guides and preventing wabbling of said struts.
Changes may be made in the form and proportions of the various elements of the chuck, the invention not being limited to the exact devices shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A chuck comprising' a chambered body having slots at intervals in its periphery, toggles with rear bearing ends fitted in said slots, said ends provided with straight surfaces disposed at an angle to each other; a sliding sleeve provided with conical and cylindrical surfaces for engaging the rear bearing ends of the toggles; aslidablev jaw-actuating sleeve, conical interiorly, and provided with seats one for one end of each toggle; chuck-jaws having conical, exterior surfaces, and each having a flange; and a cap threaded upon the chuck body, and in engagement with the flanges of the chuck-jaws.
2. A chuck comprising a body slotted at intervals in its periphery, and having straight walls at the inner ends of the slots; wedgeshaped toggles having heads provided with IOO straight surfaces, a sleeve having a conical itting in the rabbeted portions of the chuckand cylindrical surface for actuating said togjaws. IO gles; a jaw-engaging sleeveconical internally, In testimony whereof I afX my signature in and having seats one for one end of each togpresence of two Witnesses.
