JAMES Yi-UARE l., Ol? lAlVLlt'l", VERMON'I, ASSIGNOR TO llIMSELF, AND GII'BONS L. KELTY, OF BROOKLYN, NllV YORK.
SPECIIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 424,640, dated April 1, 1890.
Application filed October' 19, 1889. Serial No. 327,556. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
lie it known that I, JAMES lV. CARVER, a (ritizen of the United States, residing' at Pawletl` inthe county of Rutland an d S tate of Vermont-7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gnnights, and the :followingr is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
In ritle Shooting, and. especially target praetiee, where the gun-sieht is brought close to the eye, it Sometimes happens that the recoil of the gun brin the sight with A[oree againstY the eye or face and an injury results; also, in target practice persons who have defective vision and employ glasses are at a great disadvantage in properly sighting the 1ire-arn1. The object olf my invention i5 to protect the eye and face and to assist those who have defective vision, so thatl they may become as goed marksmen as those with perieet vision.
My invention relates to a cup-Shaped eye piece and shield and av glass or lens combined with the adjustable sight. rlhe eye piece and shield l prefer to make oli rubber with a. oontracted portion or neel: and aribbed edge that adapted to be sprung over the circumferential edge of the metal sight. The lens or glass iS held in place against. the metal laight within the contrat-ted neelt'. 'lhe Shield covers the eye, excludinglight, and thus assisting the vision, and the tace and eye are protected from injury by the reeoil et the `e'un.
l'n the drawings, 'Figure l is a vertical seetion ot a. guirsight together with the devices eonstituti ne; my inipro\-'ein ,\nt, and Vig. '3 is an elevation et the saine.
a. rein-esente part of a gun-barrel; Z1, the pivotal brideepieee; C, the slotted swinging frame, and t the vertically-adjnstable sight. Theen part.`l may he of any weil-kimwn or dt- .sired einnltrnolien, :r4 n| in1pro.en1entS are inherited to any' terni oi' sight'.
f5 rep ,niente` my iinprtjivtalenpelmped eye pieee and shield. This I prefer to malte of Sott rubber with a large openingl l at one Side Ator the eye and an edge rib at 2 to rest anainst 'the tace. The other Side is made with a eentraeted portion or neel; at j and a enrved ribbed edge at il. This edge 7a is adapted to be sprung over the edge of the Sight f7, (een Fig. 1,) securing the eye-piece e in place, the eontraeted portion j' bearing against the sur tace ot the sight. d. The lens or glass 1' is to be placed against the surface of the sight d, and the eye-piece e 'is then sprung to place,v the lens being held by the contracted portion orneelcf. The lens lishonld be adapted to the sight. ot' the marlsman whose viion i5 imperl'eet, in which ease the eye-glare s or spectacles are dispensed with. The lens being;- held to the `{run-sight, is more reliable than erdinary spectacles, as its position remains nnaltered to the sight. T he eye-piece e maybe used either with or without the lens.
I am aware that a glass or lens hasl been nSed with gulrsights.
l claim as my inventionl.. The combination, with the gnn-sigl1t,of the cup-shaped eye piece and Shield .made ot rubber or Similar vflexible material and han` ini;` an edge 71, adapted to being clasped over the gun-sight, substantially as set forth.
i2. The Combination, with the gun-sieht, o the cup-shaped eye piece and shield e, having a rib of lexible material around ite enter edema contracted portion or neel: atf, and a ribbed edge at 7a to ClaSp over the `nn-Sight, as set lferth.
Signed by nie this 7th day of October, A, l). ldt).
