MATHIAS OHALU P SKY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
MECHANISM FOR OPERATING AWNINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,270, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed October 25, 1889. Serial No. 328,197. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS CHALUPSKY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria liungary, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanisms for Operating Awnings; and I declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object an improved device for operating awnings simple and economical in construction and of superior efficiency.
To these ends my invention consists of the devices and appliances, their combinations and arrangements, as more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed, and more definitely set forth in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation. illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section at right angles to Fig. 1. Fi 3- is a separate view showing parts in section and illustrating a modification of my invention.
I carry out my invention as follows:
A represents an awning.
B represents afolding frame, provided with a cross-bar B, upon which the outer end of the awning is engaged, and hinged or jointedly engaged upon a building 0, as shown at b.
B is a roller upon which the awning is Wound up, said roller journaled upon suitable brackets E E. At one end the said roller is provided with a gear F, and preferably at the other end with a grooved pulley or wheel F, upon which a cord Gmaybe wound, said cord being engaged with the awning adjacent to the said frame B and preferably run through rings a on the side A. of the awning. To keep the cord in place and to prevent the cord becoming fouled, an arm A may be provided,
through the outer end of which, as shown at a, the said cord may be passed.
H is an operating-shaft, having geanwheel h, geared with the gear F, as shown. At the opposite end the said shaft is provided with a gear f, suitably supported on bearings H H which I prefer to engage upon an attaching or base plate I1 I is a worm-gear meshing with the gear f and provided with a shaft 1', operated by a crank J.
I is a bracket, through which the shank I is extended and in which itis journaled. This bracket may also be engaged upon the baseplate H upon which the inner end of the worm-gear is also journaled.
' K is a cap or case inclosingthe driving-gear f and I and related parts, which I engage with the, base-plate. This base-plate, therefore, when engaged upon the building, secures thereto the operating-gear at the lower end of the driving-shaft H.
The case K may be recessed to pass over the operating-shaft, said recess closed by a cap K. In this manner the operating mechanism is protected fromthe weather and from i the liability of any thing being caught thereon, while the case also makes a more sightly appearance. It will be seen thus that the awning engaged upon the roller D and frame 13 will be let down and rolled. up out of the way by simply applying the crank J and turning it in the proper direction. The heft of the frame B will naturally of its own gravity pull down the awning as the roller D is operated in the desired direction.
Where it is desired to extend the shaft H about a column or out of a perpendicular, it may be jointed, as shown at h and 7i ,suit ablebearings it being provided. The roller B may be provided with. a wheel F at each end, if preferred, and two arms A be employed.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In combination, a folding awning-frame, a roller j ournaled in suitable bearings, an awning connecting said roller with said frame, cords secured to the awning-frame and loosely connected with the edges of said awning and secured with their opposite ends to said roller, and mechanism geared with said roller for operating it, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a folding awning-frame,
aroilerjournaled in suitable bearings, an awn- In testimony whereof I sign this specificaing connecting said roller with the awningtion in the presence of two witnesses.
frame, rings secured to the edge of the awning,
a cord secured to the awning-frame, passed MATI-IIAS OI-IALUPSKY. through said rings, and secured to the roller,
a cord-guide for said cord located adjacent to \Vitnesses:
the roller, and mechanism geared with the N. S. WRIGHT,
roller for rotating it, substantially as set forth. CHAS. F. SALOW.
