STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,1Q3, dated March 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. ENO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of steam-generators illustrated or represented by the one shown in my prior application for a patent filed October 15, 1888, and serially numbered 288,170, the object of my present improvement being to reduce the cost of construction and to allow the grates to be more easily and quickly changed or removed for repair.
The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a steam-boilenmore especially of the marine type, having firechambers extending horizontally through the water-chamber. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing a modified construction. Fig. 3 is a plan of a portion of a system of. steam-gar crating pipes adapted to be arranged in said fire-chamber; and Fig. 4 is a detail section of a certain part of said system, taken 011 line at, Fig. 2.
In said drawings, 0, indicates a portion of an ordinary boiler having the horizontal firechamber b therein, around which is formed a water-chamber inthe ordinary way. Within said chamber 17 is arranged a system of Waterconducting and steam-generating pipes,which form a cage, and may, after suitable uncoupling at the front of the boiler, be removed together from the fire-chamber for repair or other purposes, substantially as described in my prior application. The said cage consists, more particularly and preferably, of two pipes c c, arrangedlongitudinally at the bottom of the chamber 17, a similar pipe d, arranged in like manner at the top of said chamber and connecting pipes e e, conforming more or less closely to the concaved walls f of the said firechamber, the said connection-pipe being arranged in series extending up from the pipes c c and entering into opposite sides of the pipe (1.
In the prior case above referred to I described and in specific clauses claimed the pipes when the said pipes formed a watergrate. In the present case I employ a cage in which the pipes do not extend across thelower part of the chambers b and form a watergrate, but an independent and separable grate is employed having its opposite bearings 011 raised shoulders or bearings g g on or of the cage, whereby the said grate may be removed or separated from the cage Without disturbing the longitudinal or connecting pipes. Said shoulders may be formed of the pipes c c, as
in Fig. 1; or when a single pipe or false bottom csuch as is shown in Fig. 2--1 s employed the said false bottom may be suitably formed to provide an ash-pit c, of adequate capacity, and to properly receive the ends of the grate-bars and hold them in the desired position, the said shoulders then being formed at or toward the sides of said false bottom.
Inlet-pipes h h are provided at the forward end of the pipes c c to supply the latter with water from the boiler, and the pipe 71 serves to convey the heated water to the upper portion of the water-chamber of the said boiler.
To reduce the cost of construction and to secure a more perfect and durable joint, I have formed the pipe 01 substantially as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, in which the said pipe is shown to be provided with flanges k k at the sides, into which or to which the pipes e may be inserted orv secured at right angles to said pipe (1, as indicated in Fig. 3. The interior of the said flanges of the pipe is provided with passages Z Z Z, which are formed to cause the water as it flows upward to change its course and flow forward or toward the pipe '6, thus facilitating the flow of the water and insuring a perfect circulation. By connecting the pipes e to the pipe (1 in the manner describedand forming the passages Zin a direction greater or less than a right angle to the pipe c], or inclining said passages Z to the passage 1n the pipe (I, so that the water will be directed forward, I am enabled to secure a more perfect joint and to reduce the cost of construction materially and secure a more perfect circulation.
\Vhen I employ the single pipe or false bottom 0, I may provide a hand-hole m, which may be closed in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new isl Theiinproved steam-generator herein described, combining, with a boiler, a cage consisting of longitudinal and connecting pipes for conducting water through the fire-chamber of said boiler from and to the water-chamber of said boiler, and a grate arranged within said cage and separable from said longitudinal and connectin pipes, whereby said grate maybe removed from the boiler firechamber without disturbing the Water-pipes of said cage, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2 In a steanrgenerator, suhstantiall y as described, the combination, with a boiler u, having a fire-chamber 12 therein, of a cage consistin g of pipes c 0, arranged longitudinally at the bottom of said chamber, a similar pipe (I, arranged at the top of said chamber, connectingpipes c 0, extending upward from said pipes c c to the pipe (Z, inlet-pipes h 71-, supplying the pipes c c, a pipe '5, to connect the pipe (Z with the upper part of the water-chamber, and a separable grate supported by said pipes c and forming an ash-pit at the lower part of the fire-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The improved steam-generator, substantially as described, combining with the boiler having a pipe or pipes c in the fire-chan'iber thereof a series of pipes c c, a longitudinal pipe (1, receiving said pipes e e at right angles and having passages l therein inclined to the central passage so as to direct the water forward, a supply-pipe, and a pipe 11, connecting with the water-chamber of the boiler, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The improved steam-generator, combining with suitable inlet and outlet pipes and longitudinal pipes c or c a flanged pipe (I, having inclined passages Z Z, and connectingpipes e e, joined to said flanged pipe at right angles thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
