UNITED Srnrns PATENT rFIcE.
EDWARD D. BLISS, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
SUSPENDER-BACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,0857, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed September 24, 1889. Serial No. 324,891. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. BLIss, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Suspender-Backs, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to backs for suspenders, to which backs are joined the shoulder-straps and back button-hole tab-pieces; and the improvement consists in composing such back pieces of two portions, each portion of which is folded at about midway in its width. After being so folded the two portions are joined together by lacing. Such lacing I prefer shall be elastic.
I will describe in detail a suspendenback embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a Suspender-back embodying my improvement and showing portions of shoulder-straps and rear tab-pieces secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a face View of one of the two portions composing. the back. When the same is folded, the fold is taken on the line as m of said figure. Fig. 3 is a view of one of said portions folded. Fig. 4 is an end view of the two portions of the back piece, showing the same laced together, but without the shoulder-straps and tab-pieces secured thereto. Fig. 5 is a view of a facing-piece, one of which may be applied to each of the portions of the back.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A B designate the two portions of'the back. These portions are made alike, or substantially sotl1at is to say, they are each of the same shape-as shown more clearly in Fig.2, and each is folded at about midway in its width, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. Each of the pieces A B is provided with two rows of eyelets, which rows of eyelets are arranged to extend upon opposite sides of the foldingline, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. In forming the back I take a lacing piece or pieces 0 and lace it or them to and fro between the eyelets of the two portions. The two portions are then folded together. In thus I tions and extending folding them the knots or other means by which the ends of the lacing piece or pieces are secured together are upon the inside, or, in other words, between the folds of the portions A B. I have shown this more clearly in dotted outline in Fig. 1. The portions of the back having been thus secured together show a strap portion D D, and rear tab portions D D may be secured between the folds of the portions .A B by stitching, as is shown also more clearly in'Fig. 1.
Preferably I face each of the portions A B with afacing-piece E. This facing-piece is laid against each of the portions A B before the same are folded,-and its edge portions are each notched and, as shown, are folded over upon the inner edges of the portions A B, where they may be secured by paste or otherwise. The facing-pieces E add a finish to the portions A B.
It will be seen that by my improvement I employ but two pieces for the separate portions of the back, and also that backs may, according to my improvement, be sewed together with the lacing piece or pieces and thus sold as an article of commerce, the straps and tab portions to be subsequently attached. It is also to be observed that the knot or other means for securing the ends of thelacing piece or pieces is, as previously stated, secured when the parts are together.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In suspenders, the combination of a back piece composed of 't-W-a portions, each portion being folded atab'aeit midway in its width, and lacing adjacent to the folds of said porbetween the said portions, substantially all specified.
2. In suspenders, the combination of a back piece composed of two portions, each portion being folded at about midway in its length, and elastic lacing adjacent to the folds of said portions and extending between the said portions, substantially as specified.
EDWARD D. BLISS.
