. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE S. SMITH AND WILLIAM GARRETT, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO THE J OLIET STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR DRIVING ROD-MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,826, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed June 15, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HORACE S. SMITH and WILLIAM GARRETT, both of Joilet,Will county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Driving RodlVIillS, of which the following is a-full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combination of a single engine with four rolling-mills or sets of rolls by which said rolls may be driven from one engine by simple connections and at different velocities. In the process of manufacturing billets into wire it is important to drive four sets of rolls, each at a velocity greater than the preceding in the train, the said rolls diminishing, generally, in size as the operation proceeds. It has heretofore been generally customary to employ separate engines at different speeds for these different rolls. \Ve have invented an arrangement of a single engine with four sets of rolls by which the said rolls are driven at different speeds, the first roll being driven directly from the engine-shaft and the others by the multiplying arrangements hereinafter to be described.
Our invention will'be readily understood f romthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of our engine and rolls; and Fig. 2, a vertical elevation, partly in section, showing the arrangements of the driving-belts.
P represents an engine driving the main shaft A. This engine may be an independent engine, or any other suitable source of power may be employed. R represents the condenser of this engine.
The main shaft A drives directly the first set of rollers S, which may be of any desired number or arrangement. The second shaft B drives the second set of rollers T, which may be of any desired number or arrangement. The third shaft C drives the third set of rollers V, and the fourth shaft D drives the fourth set of rollers TV. All of these sets of rollers may be arranged in any known or Serial No. 314,515, (No modeLl desirable way. The first shaft A is belted (double belted, as shown) to the second shaft B, the pulleys E being greater in diameter than the pulleys F, thereby increasing the velocity of the shaft B. Upon the shaft B are two driving-pulleys G and Y. The pulley G is belted by belt L to pulley H, and the pulley Y by belt M to the pulley J, the pulley H being upon the shaft 0 and the pulley J upon the shaft D. The pulleys G and Y are larger, respectively, than the pulleys H and J, and in such relations as that the shaft D is revolved more rapidly than the shaft C.
The rates of revolution of the rollers S, T, V, and 7 can be determined by proportioning the pulleys E, F, G, Y, H, and J in the manner well-known to engineers.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a single drivingshaft and four roller-mills, each with a shaft connected directly therewith and provided with belt-pulleys, the second shaft having a smaller pulley than the first to receive the driving-belt from the first, and two large pulleys from which the belts pass to smaller pulleys on the third and fourth shafts, the pulley of the latter being the smallest, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the driving-shaft A, carrying driving-pulley E and driving roller S, the belt K, driving pulley F upon shaft B, the said shaft driving the roller T and the pulleys G H, the belt L, driven from pulley G and driving pulley H, the said pulley H driving the shaft C and roller V, and the pulley Y, driving belt M and pulley J, the said pulley J driving the shaft D and roller V,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HORACE S. SMITH. VILLIAM GARRETT. W'itnesses:
W. D. PUTLAND, S. J. DREW.
