BPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,492, dated November 6, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PHILIP HENRY BRAOHER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at WVincanton, in the county of Somerset, in the Kingdom of England, manufacturer, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Peat- Litter, (for which I have received in part Letters Patent in England, dated January 16, 1884, No. 1,500,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object a machine to tear up peat to form bedding for horses and other animals, the machine being also applicable for other purposes. It is best described by aid of the accompanying drawings, made in accordance with my invention, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line A B.

L is a frame-work or stand formed of several pieces securely bolted together and provided with braces, so as to be perfectly rigid. A number of equidistant bars, D, are provided, which form an open grating, having side flanges, d, and a base-flange, d, which is secured to the frame L by the bolts 0.

C is a hopper or box having straight sides,

and removably secured to the outside of the side flanges, d, of the grating by the screws 0.

Oand E are two spindles which pass through the lower part of the hopper, and are journaled in bearings secured to the frame L outside the hopper. Each shaft is provided with a number of teeth, F, having bifurcated ends These teeth have their shanks screwed into or otherwise firmly secured to the shafts, and they break up the peat against the bars D or against each other. \Vhen two or more shafts are used provided with teeth or cutters, they can be geared together by means of gearwheels G. These wheels may be made the same size, so that the shafts revolve at the same speed, or the gearing may be arranged so that one shaft revolves at a higher speed than the other. If desired, an intermediate gearing wheel or wheels may be added, so that the shafts revolve in the same direction, and thus one drags the peat through the ascending teeth of the other. I prefer, however, to make the wheels of nearly equal diameter, one of them to have, say, one tooth more than the other. This causes the cutters to wear more evenly.

H is a fly-wheel on one of the shafts G, which projects beyond the other.

J is a crank-handle for turning the machine; or, if desired, the shafts may be provided with fast-and-loose pulleys K for driving by means of a belt.

The drawings show a simple arrangement; but I do not bind myself to this as regards details. Several shafts may be employed, if desired, or they may be arranged to work in pairs.

The machine, besides being applicable to tear up peat for bedding, may be used for tearing up peat for other purposes. It may also be used in cheese-factories for breaking the curd. For this purpose the details of con strnction may be altered, but the principle of the invention will remain the same.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a peat-breaker, the combination, with the frame L, of the bars D, secured thereto and provided with side flanges, (l, the hopper secured to said side flanges, and the revolving shafts provided with teeth having bifurcated ends f which pass between the said bars and break the peat against them, substantially as set forth.

2. In a peat-breaker, the combination, with the stand L, of the bars D, secured thereto and provided with the side flanges, d, the removable hopper secured outside the said side flanges by the screws 0, and the revolving shafts provided with teeth F and journaled in bearings secured to the frame outside the hopper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
