IRVING A. KILMER, OF NEIVBURG, NEYV YORK.
ROD-MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,674, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed January 12', 1891- Serial No. 377,512. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, IRVING A. KILMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Orange, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod-Mills,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rod-mills; and it has for its objects, among others, economy of space and facility of manipulation of the rod. I arrange but three pulleys on the main shaft, taking power from the shaft of the side train to actuate the billet-train. I provide repeaters, all upon the side of the trains farthest from the billet-train. The sections of the finishing-train and the side train are arranged in close proximity to each other and at a distance from the billet-train. v
Other objects and-advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and in which is shown a plan of my improvement.
Referring now to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the main operating-shaft, which is j ournaled in suitable bearin gs and arranged to be driven from any suitable source of power or motor, either a single or double engine, being shown as provided with two cranks, although of course it will be understood that one may be omitted, if desired. On this main operating-shaft are three band-pulleys B, O, and D of different diameters.
The plant comprises four series or trains of rolls, consisting of a billet-train E, a side train F, and two finishing-trains G and H. The side train is arranged at a distance from the billet-train, and the two finishing-trains are arranged in proximity to each other and to the side train. On the shaft of the side train, which is extended beyond its bearing, is a pulley a, which is connected with the pulley peater in the billet-train.
B on the main operating-shaft by the belt 0. On this shaft of the side train is also a pulley d, slightly smaller than the pulley a, and this pulley is connected with a larger pulley e on the shaft of the billet-train by the belt f. On the shafts of the finishing-trains are the small pulleys g and h, which are connected, respectively, with the pulleys O and D on the main shaft A by the belts t' and j. By this arrangement it will be seen that the driving means is compactly arranged and that the several trains are driven at different rates of speed.
The final roll of the billet-train is arranged in line with the initial roll of the side train, and between the two is arranged a straight guide 75, and the initial rolls of the finishingtrains are beyond the final rolls of the side train and intermediatefinishing-train, so that curved guides or repeaters can be employed,
all upon one side of the trains and that upon the side farthest away from the billet-train. By this arrangement and disposition of parts I get all the repeaters Zon one side and compactly dispose the driving means and get the required variation in speed at the minimum outlay. The catchers are all upon the opposite side of the trains. I also employ a re- This is designated by the letter m.
hat I claim as new is 1. In a rod-mill plant, the main shaft, combined with the three pulleys thereon, the shafts of the several trains, pulleys thereon, and belts connecting the same, substantially as specified.
2. In a rod-mill plant, the main shaft and its three pulleys, combined with the shafts of the finishing-trains, the pulleys thereon, the shaft of the side train extended and provided with two pulleys, the shaft of the billet-train and its pulley, and the belts connecting the pulleys, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRVING A. KILMER.
