' J. W. MADDOX. DEYIGE FOR BRAZING.
No. 423,614. Patented Mar. 18, 1890.
Nv PETERS. Phowlil mP r. Washington. D. c
I UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
JOHN W. MADDOX, or JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR BRAZlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,614, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed July 2%, 1889. Serial No. 318,476. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. MADDOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Brazing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates todevices for brazing together the ends of band-saws; and it'h'as for its object to provide adevice for this purpose which shall be simple in construction, easily manipulated without the assistance of expert labor, and which shall be effective in operation.
The invention comprises a lamp forming the base of the machine and having two burners, one at each end, a clamping device to hold the saw arranged between the said burners, and a bellows and blow-pipe to blow the flames in the direction of the saw for the purpose of melting the solder.
The invention further consists in the details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device with the ends of a band-saw in position for being operated upon. Fig; 2 is a longitudinal vertical' sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken vertically through the clamping device.
' Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates the reservoir of a lamp, the top of which 2 constitutes the base of the device. The lamp is provided near each end with a burner 3, and at each end of the top is secured a bracket 4:. To one of the brackets 4 is attached a cup-shaped disk 5, over which is stretched a head or diaphragm 6, of rubber or other suitable elastic material. To the disk 5 is suitably connected a flexible tube 7, and blow-pipes 8 lead from the said disk through perforations 9 in the brackets 4 4, and terminate at points opposite to the burners, the flames from which may thus be projected inwardly over the base of the machine.
Suitably mounted above and centrally upon the base of the machine is a bracket 10, having outwardly-extending arms 11, provided at one of their sides with upwardly-extending lugs 12. The arms 11 have rearwardly-extending projections 13, to receive thumbscrews 14, by; means of which clamping-plates 15 may be forced downwardly against the faces or upper sides of the arms 11. Suitably pivoted to one side of the bracket 10 are a pair of levers 16 16, the inner ends of which extend between the arms 11, and are provided with heads'1'7, having flat faces 18, that face each other,'as shown. The outer ends of the levers are connected by means of a spring 19, which serves to force the heads 17 normally apart from each other.
Pivoted to the side of the bracket 11, between the levers 16 16, is a cam 20, having a lever or handle 21, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated so as to force the outer ends of the levers apart from each other, and thus bring the faces of the heads 17 closely together.
In-operation the ends of aband-saw are first filed off slantingly in the usual manner, and they are then placed upon the upper sides of the arms 11, slightly lapping over each other,
and-a piece of silver-solder being interposed between the overlapping ends of the saw. The ends of the saw are then secured by tightening the thumb-screws 14 and clamp ing-plates 15. The ends of the saw are held in alignment by placing the back of a saw against the upwardly-extending lugs 12 of the arms 11. The ends of the saw, as well as the interposed piece of solder, are washed with acid in the usual manner. By blowing through the tube '7 air is now forced into the space between the cup-shaped disk 5 and the elastic diaphragm 6, which latter expands, and by again contracting serves to force the air through the blow-pipes 8, by means of which the flames from the burners 3 3 are projected inwardly until they strike the point at which the ends of the saw are overlapped. Being thus subjected to intense heat, the solder will be quickly melted and the ends of'the saw raised to the required temperature, when the blowing is suspended and the cam -lever manipulated so as to bring the faces of the heads 17 together, clamping and tightly compressing the ends of the saw, which will thus be accurately and firmly joined. At the same time the comparatively low temperature of the disks or heads 17 will chill the ends of ICO the saw, which are thus caused to retain their temper. W
The operation'and advantagesof this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The construction is simple' and inexpensive, and the device may be successfully manipulated without the assistance of skilled labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a3 device for brazingband-saws, the
combination of a lamp having-two burners,-
said burners, and having outwardly-extend ing arms provided with upwardly-extending lugs; clamps adapted to be forced down against the faces of'said arms, and blow-- pipesarranged to project flame between the inner ends of the said arms, substantially as set forth.
3.-In,a'device for brazing band-saws, the
combination of a lamp having two burners, abracket mounted upon the same between said burners, and having outwardly-extending arms provided with clamping devices, arms .or brackets mounted adjustably upon the-ends of the lamp, a bellows or air-compressingdevice attachedto one of said bracketsyahdblow-pipes extendingv from said air compressing device through guide openings or perforations in the said brackets, substantially as set forth.
4.1m device-for brazing band-saws, the
combination ofa lamp, a bracket mounted upon'the same and having outwardly-extending armsprovided with lugs and clamping devices,':a pair of levers connected pivotally to one side of the said bracket and extended inwardly betweenthe said arms and provided with heads havin g flat meeting faces, a spring to force the inner ends of said levers normally apart, a cam-lever mounted pivotally between said clamping-levers and adapted to force their inner ends'gtogether, an, aircompressing device, and blow-pipes arranged to project flame between the inner ends of the horizontal saw-supporting arms, substantially as set forth.
a 5. In a device for brazing band-saws, the combination of T a lamp -haV-ing a burner at each end, a bracket arranged intermediately between said burners and having outwardlyextending arms provided with lugs and clamping devices, the clampingdeverspiw oted to said bracket andextendinginwardly;
between said arms, acam-lever to operate the said clamping-levers, brackets .m'ounted adjustably at each end of the lamp,.afbellows or 1 air-compressing device attached tof; one of the said brackets, and blow-pipes extending from said air compressing; device through guide-openings in the said bracket and ter- .minating adjacent to-the outer sides of the burners, substantially as and for, the purpose,
set forth.
6. In a device for brazing band-saws, the,
combination, with clamps fornholding' the.
required heat, said clampsbeing.mounted.'
between the burners of a lam'p whichis pro vided with blow-pipes, and an air-compress' ing-device for projecting-flame in the direction' of the hold i'ng-clamps; substantially as set forth. A
l t In testimony that I claim the foregoing asx my own I have hereto affixed my.-- signature in presence of two witnesses.
