T0 dll wlwm it mag concern Be il; known that I, SILAS ORISIIN, of the city und Staate ofNew York, h2we invented a new end Improved Cartridge for Breech-L'oading Fire-Arms and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exaet description thereof, reference being had to th e accompanyiug drawings, and to the letbers ofrel'erence marked thereou.
In tlmt dass of breecln loading fire-erms which are opened and olosed 011 a hingedjoint, es per example in the patent of Gilbert Smith, dated J une 23, 1857, it; is found in praotioe extremely diflieult to effeet a secure packing of the joint, one whieh will positively prevent the escape of the gases genera-ted by the explosion of the charge of powder under all cireumstances. Indeed, I am not eware tl1at any known cartridge Will perfeelzly and uniform ly efiecl: this most desirable result. II; is manifest that where this defeet: exists the entire projectile foroe of tl1e explosion eannot loe secured besides which, the residuum of tl1e powder around the hiuged joint, or between the breeeh and the ordinary metal-cup cartridge, (where such is used in breech-loaders,) seriously retard, if they do 11013 entirely prohibit, tl1e reloading 0f the piece, and thus defeat the mein purpose of the breeeh-loadernamely, rapid firing.

The end ofthe cartridge is now eompressed over the end of the former and chocked with a chocking-string, which is replaced by a thread after the stringis withdrawn, as in making the common cartridge. The case, yet upon the former, is inserted into an iron or steel die anti a smart blow is given 130 the former by a hammer 0r mallet. The former is now withdrawn and a cup, having first bee11 dipped in any adhesive material, is inserted and forced to the bottom 0f the cartridge, which is now ready 110 be charged. The cantridge-ease thus formed receives its eharge of powder, when the ball, having a groove around its lower edge and being properly greased, is inserted and the case is compressed by Et ohocking-string, 01
detriment to my improved cartridge. It is obvious that, for protection against moisture, the outer coating of the eartridge may be coated with any suitable 01' approved water-proof V&Ifnish.
