SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,212, dated March 11, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. BOL- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Florence, in the county of \Vestto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved shoe; and it consists in forming the entire upper from a single piece of leather cut and folded in a peculiar manner, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the position of the only seam in the upper. Fig. 2 is a diagram of the upper cut to form the above-mentioned shoe. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the upper folded to show the position of the several portions of the same.

To put my invention into practice I provide a suitable piece of leather and form an oval front a,which forms the toe and sides of the shoe. At a point 1), directly atthe rear of the apex a of this blank, is the beginning of a downward]y-extending circular cut (2, which terminates near the lower edge cl of the blank. The upper edge of this out 0 forms one side of the vent, in which eyelets e or any other desired fastening is placed. Beginning at the lower end of this last-desoribed out cis another f, semicircular in form and meets the lower edge d of the blank at an acute angle. This lower portion g, when the shoe is finished, occupies a position inside the heel, and is used for what is known to the art as a stiffener. The up per edge h of this out f is the top periphery of the shank or leg of the shoe. Therear of this blank forms the other side i of the vent by means of a diagonal cut 7c, partially turned in when eyelets are used, and the said turned in portion of the tongue. At the upper extremity of this last described cut is a small rounded portion Z, which strengthens the point of junction of the two sides of the vent. From this curved portion Z a cut in is made and a piece removed, leaving at one end an angular corner, which makes a vertical seam 0 at the instep of the shoe.

By reference to Fig. 3 on the drawings it will be readily understood how the upper is put together, and it is obvious that the said blank may be used either for a button or lace shoe.

Having thus described my invention, what- I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-

1. The herein-described shoe, the upper and heel-stiffener of which are formed from the blank herein described and joined together by a single scam in 0, extending from the vent along the vamp to the inner instep and thence downwardly to the sole of the shoe, and the portion 9, forming the stiffener stitched to the rear or heel portion of the shoe, substantially as shown and described.

2. The herein-described blank or pattern for forming the entire shoe-upper and heelstiffener from an undivided piece of leather, consisting of the oval front to form the vamp, the downwardly-extending curved out o in the vamp, one side of which is provided with a means for closing the vent of the shoe, the longitudinal semicircular cut f, the upper side h of which forms the top periphery of the shoe, and provided with the portion 9 below the heel-stiffener, the straight or curved edge 70, with means for closing the vent, the rounded portion 1 to strengthen the joining of the vent, and the recessed or removed portion at the rear upper end of the blank, substantially as shown and described.
