JOSEPH L. STILLMAN, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA. I
ANT-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,190, dated March 11, 1890.
Application filed July 29, 1889. Serial No. 319,135. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
. Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. STILLMAN, of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ant-Traps, of which the following is a specication The object of my invention is to provide means for protecting tables, safes, refrigerators, boxes, and all kinds of receptacles from ants or other crawling insects; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts of an ant-trap provided with an annular or circular water-trough designed to be applied to the legs or base of the receptacle to be protected, as will be hereinafter-fully described with reference to the drawing, which shows a verticalcentral section of the' trap.
B is the base ot` the trap, which is formed with a circular trough O all around the same, adapted to be filled with water or other liquid to intercept the passage of the ants, in which water a little alcohol, acid, or other chemical is preferably placed to keep the water from becoming impure.
His a socket for a caster or roller. The central part of the base B projects above the trough, and is formed into a cup or tapering socket B', adapted to receive the leg of a table, safe, or other receptacle. Resting upon the rim of this socket is arranged a plate D, which has upon its under side a boss or enlargement d, which its inside the socket to keep it from slipping, and is connected to the base B by means of a central screw-bolt O. A A are screws adapted to fasten the plate D to the bottom of a box, case, or other iiat-bot- ,tom receptacle having no legs, and A' are screws adapted to fasten the socket B' tothe leg of a table, safe, or other similar receptacle. I am aware that a base having a circular trough for water has heretofore been applied -to the leg of a table, dac.; but I do not know that such a device has been constructed which is universally applicable to receptacles which haveeither legs or iiat bottoms.
My invention is made thus universally applicable by means of the. detachable plate D and bolt O. When appliedl to any flat-bottom box or case, the plate D is fastened by screws A to the bottom of the box, the plate being previously fastened to the 'base B by screw-bolt O. When, however, the device is to be applied to a table or other article having legs, the plate D is disconnected from the base B by unscrewing the bolt O, and the table-leg 'is then stepped in tapering socket B', and is tightly secured therein bythe screws A'.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 'lhe base B, having a circular trough O around the same, and a tapering socket B' at the top, with screws A', in combination with the plate D,'having boss d, fitted to enter the tapering socket, the screws A, and the screwbolt O, connecting the plate D to the base B, substantially as shown and described.
