Description

F. DERCK 6L E. PRIEST..
VERVIIN GUARIL APPUCATION FILED JULY 24.1915.
Li 19am-md Nov. 2?, 1917.
inn-nenn rarnnr o FRED BERCK AND ELVIN PRIEST, G3? KOKOIVIO, INDIANA.
VERMIN-GUARD.
Application filed July 24, 1916.
To all whom z'z may concern.'
Be it known that we7 FRED Duron and EL- VIN Pmnsr, citizens of the United' States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of indiana, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Vermin-Guards; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such -as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in insect guards for bedsteads, tables and other articles of furniture and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device that is interposed between the leg of the bed, table or article of furniture and the ground, and is so constructed that it will prevent insects from crawling upon the furniture.
another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which includes a receptacle that is adapted to be filled with liquid so that the insect will be caught in the liquid if it attempts to pass the saine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character' which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be highly efficient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts which will. be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
Tn the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a vertical section of the insect guard showing a caster positioned therein;
Fig. 2 is top plan view of the guard; and,
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same.
ln describing our invention we shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which the numeral 1 designates the base of the guard which comprises a substantially cupshaped member having an upstruck central portion 2 therein that is flattened as shown at 3. This flattened central portion is provided with an opening 4t therethrough adapted to receive a locking screw 5 for a purpose to be hereinafter :more fully described.
The cup-shaped base l is provided with Patented Nov., 2'?, i917..
serial no, 111,043.
an annular hood G which is larger than the base and which is provided with downwardly projecting side edges 7 that overlap the side edges of the base and are spaced therefrom. y
The annular' hood 6 is provided with a centrally disposed depression 8 that has its lowermost point flattened as shown at 9. This lowermost flattened portion 9 of the depression 8 is adapted to be positioned on the {iattened portion 3 of the base, and is provided with an opening l() therethrough that is adapted for alinement with the opening 4 in said base. Vvvhen these two parts are in position, the locking screw 5 is adapted to securely lock the same together. lf desired, the screw 5 may be eliminated and a rivet be used to lock the parts together but the locking screw is preferable inasmuch as the parts may be readily detached when it is used, and cleaned when desired.
The hood 6 is provided with an opening ll through which any liquid may be poured into the cup-shaped base l. This liquid may be any poison or insecticide which will eX- terminate insects so that it will be impossible for insects that climb up the sides of the cup-shaped base to pass across to the hood. The annular depression 8 in thc hood 6 is adapted to receive therein either a caster as shown in Fig. l of the drawing or a table leg', etc. When the furniture is positioned within the depression, the same may be easily moved from place to place, owing to the fact that the bottom of the base l slides easily on the floor.
TWhen. this guard is in operation, there will be absolutely no chance of insects crawling from the fioor to the furniture, and this device in addition to forming a guard also acts as a sliding cap which permits the furniture to be easily moved from place to place. The removable locking screw when in use, allows the hood and base to be easily detached when it is desired to clean the same.
F rom the foregoing description of the construction and operation of our improved insect guard, the manner of applying the saine to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that we have provided a simpleand efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
We claim A device of the class described, compris ing a cup-shaped sheet metal base having its central portion struck upwardly and flattened, said portion having a centrally disposed aperture therein, an annular hood for said hase7 said hood being formed from sheet vmetal and having its central portion depressed and flattened, said hood having its side edges projecting downwardly past the upper edge of the base and spaced therefrom, a lling opening adjacent said edges, and said depression having an aperture therein in alinement with the aperture in saidv base and a fastening element received therethrough to secure the base and hood together, and said base and hood having their 15 Vwalls and flattened portions of a uniform thickness throughout.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our handsin the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
