FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,422, dated March 4, 1890.

Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolivar, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being-had to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a picket fence. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a wire fence. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the fence properly anchored. Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing the construction for a wire fence. Fig. 5 is a detached view of one of the wire supports. Fig. 6 is a view of a portion of one of the guards.

The present invention has relation to fences; and it consists in difierent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw ings.

In the accompanying drawings, A represen ts the pickets, which may be constructed in the ordinary manner, and are held in the desired position by means of the twisted wires a. If desired, the pickets A may be dispensed with and the wires B used in place of the 'pickets,-or boards may be used in constructing a fence.

The fence is securely held in proper upright position by means of brace-wires O. The bottom or lower ends of the brace-wires G are wound around stones or like objects, as illustrated, and said stones buried, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.

In the construction of wire fences such as is shown in Fig. 2 the supports D are used, which consist of the bars held the desired distance apart by means of the blocks d. The bottom or lower ends of these supports D are placed upon the stones E, or their equivalents. In use the brace-wires O are wrapped around the top wires of a picket fence, substantially as shown in Fi 1', and their bottom or lower ends firmly held in the position shown by means of suitable anchors.

It will be understood that the bracawires O are not to be wrapped around the top wire of the fence, in case it is constructed of wire, for the reason hereinafter stated.

In case the fence is constructed of wires, the brace-wires O are wrapped around the spikes or pins F, which spikes or pins are attached to supports D, as shown in Fig. 5.

The object and purpose of attaching the brace-wires O to the pins or spikes F is to tighten the fence' wires without interfering with the brace-Wires. The fence-wires f are attached to the supports D by means of the staples g.

For the purpose of holding the fence proper in a rigid upright position the cross-wires G are provided, which are attached to the bracewires O and wrapped around the bottom wires a in picket fences and around the lower pin or spike F in wire fences. These crosswires G are drawn tight, thereby securely holding the brace-wires O in a firm condition.

It will be seen that by my peculiar construction I am enabled to tighten the fence proper by disengaging one end of the crosswires G and again drawing the cross-wires until they are tight and wrapping them around the brace-wires C. This will not need to be done except in cases where the fence has become loose from long and continued use.

It will be seen that I am enabled to properly tighten an old fence without removing or interfering with its anchors.

For the purpose of preventing stock from becoming injured by running against the fence the guards h are provided, which guards are placed over the brace-wires O, and are held in the desired position by means of the staples h. It will be seen that by providing the guards h the location of the fence can be seen, thereby preventing stock from running against the fence proper.

In Fig. 1 guards 'h are shown; but I do not deem it absolutely necessary to provide these guards in case pickets are used in the construction of fences.
