G. A SHELLEY.
Q I Square and Bevel.
N0.E42 ,f230. Patented April 5, 1-864.
N. PETERS, Phowiilhognphor, Wnshinglum DiC- GEORGE A. SHELLEY, ()F MADISON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SQUARE AND BEVEL COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,230, dated April 5, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SHELLEY, of Madison, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Square and Bevel Combined and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my inventionf Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same in a difierent position from Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference in the views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a square at taehed to an ordinary slotted stock, by means of a screw-pivot, in sucha manner that said square can be turned on the pivot and set in any desired position in relation to the stock, and either arm of the square can be used to draw lines in an oblique direction to the edges of the stock, or, if desired, the square can be converted into and used as a T-square.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
A represents the stock of a square made of two pieces or jaws, 0 d, of wood or other suitable material, which are held apart by a strip, a, of sheet metal or other material, fastened between their ends. This strip terminates at three a short distance from the end of the stock, leaving an open gap, 1), between the two jaws c d, capable of receiving the square B. This square is made of a plain piece of sheet-steel or other suitable material, of an even thick 11*ss throughout, and it is connected to the stoekgby means of a screw-pivot, e. This pivot is attached to the stock at that end opposite to the strip a, and it passes freely through the jaw (I, while its point is fitted to a thread cut in to the jaw c, and it is provided with a shoulder, which bears an ainst the outer surface of thejaw 01, so that by screwing up said screw the square is firmly compressed between the two jaws. By these means the square can be brought in any desirable position in relation to the stock. It can either be arranged as shown in black outlines in Fig. 1, and used as an ordinary square, or it can be 'brought in the position shown in red outlines in Fig. 1, or in any other desirable oblique position in relation to the'stock, when both arms of the square will act in the capacity of bevels; and, finally, the square may be brought in the position shown in Fig. 3, when it assumes the form of a T -square, and can be used as such.
What I claim as my new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the square B, screwpivot e, and slotted stock A, all arranged and operatingsubstantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
GEO. A. SHELLEY.
