- UNITED STATES YATnNT OFFICE,-
GOSWIN CASTLE, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
S H O E H E E L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,499, dated January 14, 1890.
Application filed October 15, 1889. Serial No. 327,054. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GoswrN CASTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful'Improvenients in Heel-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has reference to an improvement in heel-bands for boots, shoes, and other articles of foot-wear, its object being to strengthen the construction of the shoe and solidify and compact the parts thereof more securely together, -'such as the combination of the heel and the upper; and the invention consists in the construction and combination, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved heel-band for boots and shoes. Fig. 2 is a rear detail elevation of a shoe upper and heel provided with my improved heelband. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in the several figures.
D represents a shoe-heel, and E a portion of a shoe-upper, in connection with which heel and upper my improved heel-band is used for the purpose of firmly connecting said parts together. These parts are given here by way of example only, as the invention is equally applicable to boots and shoes of all kinds and adapted for general or special use.
My heel-band comprises a semicircular or other similarly-shaped strip of metal A-say iron or steel-located around the end of the boot or shoe at the point where the heel is fastened thereto. (See Fig. 2.) The upper edge of this metallic strip is provided with the upwardly-projecting side ears or projections a a and with the upwardly-projecting rear middle ear a', which is perforated to permit the passage therethrough of a screw or pin, which assists in securing the heel-bandV screw-holes, and said ears being preferably slightly curved to conform to the shape of the heel, alongside of which they rest and to which they are secured. The curved metal Strip A is also provided with an internal horizontal semi-annular ange C, adapted to be seated between the heel and the upper.l The said iiange projects but a little distance, but sufficiently to give it a firm solid bearing between the heel and the upper. This serves to make the combination of parts stronger and more rigid. The size ofthe flange may vary to suit the circumstances of different cases. Its use forms an important feature of the invention. y
p The band A, with its upper and lower cars and its internal ange being all made integral, forms an effective device for connecting the heel of the shoe immovahly to its upper, and serves many useful advantages in shoe construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described heel-band, consisting of the semicircular band A, having the upper side ears a ct, the rear middle ear a', and the lower end ears B B, and having the internal horizontal semicircular flange O, adapted to be seated in the rand-crease between the heel and the upper, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GOSWIN CASTLE. Witnesses:
E. AVARY, GEO. G. CLARABUT.
