Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. SHAW, OF SCRANTON CITY, IOWA.
cALF-Wi-:AN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,078, dated January '7, 1890.
Application iiled April 24, 1889. Serial No. 308,405. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. SHAW, a citizen of the United States` residing at Scranton City,in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-IVeaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for weaning calves; and my invent-ion relates especially to a gravitating basket and to a band adapted to surround the throat or nose portions of the animal, and also to certain other devices, which will be fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device, showing it a-pplied to the head of an animal, which is shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same parts, indicating the position of the basketshield when the animal is eating.
Referring to the annexed drawings, A designates a wire shield composed, essentially, of a bow I), a bow b', and a series of meshwork Wires b2, forming a shield which is designed for covering the mouth of the animal when the head is in a position for sucking the mother, and which is hinged or linked to a noseband in such a manner that during the act of eating the said shield will, by impingement against the ground, rise automatically and leave the mouth of the animal free. The ends of the bow b have eyes d. formed on them which are adapted to engage with loops d', formed on the chin-band B, which latter is a metallic portion united at B', and adapted to t loosely the jaws of the animal.
nose-shield A articulates about the joints d. d', and is arrested in its downward movement by a iiexible strap or chain a., connecting the chin-band B with the bow b. Straddling the joints which connect the shield to the chinband B are linked loosely loops O C, to which the head-band D is adj ustably attached, a-s shown in the annexed drawings.
During the act of eating the cage or guard is turned, as shown in Fig. 2. The normal positionf the said guard covers the nose and mouth 0f the animal, so that it is impossible for it to suckle. This position of the guard is represented by Fig. 1.
An essential feature of my invention is the chin-band B, formed with eyes d of one piece.
Another essential feature is the device A, having the bow b, provided with the reticulated shield, the ends of said bow terminating in interlooping eyes d, engaging with the chin-band eyes d', and forming the back bow b of the cage or reticulated shield; and another feature is the strap-loops C, the limbs of which are looped astride of the articulat` ing-points of the gravitating shield. The said loops O are thus held in proper place on the chin-band.
Ilaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A calf weaner comprising the following instrumentalities in combination a chinband B, having formed on it the eyes d', and provided with the loops C C, straddling said eyes, the cage A, having a base-bow b, provided with a back bow forming eyes engaging the chin-band loops, and also forming the back bow Z9 of the said cage, and an elastic connection a, located in the median line of the device and attached to the chin-band and also to the back bow of the cage, all as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL E. SIIAW. lVitnesses:
P. P. PITCHER, C. W. STILLwELL.
