UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH THOMPSON, OF DECOTO, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO FRANK CORDE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
KNIFE-CLEAN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,964, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1889. Serial No. 314,967. (No model.)
To (1 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH THOMPSON, of Decoto, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Knife-Cleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a simple, inexpensive, and durable household implement that is applicable for use in the cleaning of IO table-knives, the main object of the invention being to provide for the yielding support of the polishing material, and for the delivery of such material in such quantities as may be I required.
To the ends above named the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the various parts, as will be hereinafter explained, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is plan view of my improved knifecleaner, the lid or cover being thrown. back. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the cleaner, taken on the line 00 a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view thereof.
In the drawings, represents a box-like structure, in one end of which there is a transverse slot or opening a. The box is provided with a lid or cover 11, upon which there is secured a strip of polishing-leather 12, and
5 the lid is normally held closed by hooks or catches 13. YVithin the box 10, I arrange a rubber strip 14, and above said strip 14, I place a thin apertured strip 15, the apertures in the said strip being shown at b. In
order that the strips 14 and 15 may be yieldingly held together,I provide strips 16 and 16, which carry blocks 17, that are provided with springs 18, said springs bearing against the under face of the lid or cover 11. The approaching edges of the strips 16 and 16 are cut away at places, as shown at 0.
I11 order that the cleaner may be held against displacement, I form the bottom of the box 10 with projections f, that are apertured to receive retaining-screws, by means of which the cleaner may be secured to any fixed object.
111 operation the polishing material, which may be emery, pulverized bath-brick, or any other of the well-known polishing agents, is placed in the space above the strips 16 and 16, and the knife to be cleaned is passed in between the strips 14 and 15, entering through the slot at. The knife having been placed as just set forth is reciprocated, the polishing material passing downward through the openings formed by the cuts 0 and apertures 12.
The polishing-strip 12 may be used for forks as well as knives.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a knife-cleaner, the combination, with a box 10, formed with a slot or aperture to at one end, of a rubber strip 14, located in the bottom of the box, an apertured longitudinal strip 15, arranged above the strip 14, strips 16 and 16 arranged above the apertured strip 15, cut away at suitable points along their adjacent edges, blocks carried by the strips 16 and 16, and springs carried by the blocks and arranged to bear against the boxlid, substantially as described.
J OSEPI-I THOMPSON.
