JEROME D. FERREE, OF GTTUMIVA, IOlVA.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,914, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed .Iuly l, 1889. Serial No. 316,129. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME D. FEEREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of Vapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and usetulImprovement in Sash Lock and Fastener, of I which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sash lock and fastener adapted to be used on sash which are hung or balanced with weights and pulleys, and is capable of locking the upper and lower sash and holding` the upper sash in any desired position. The contrivance is such as not to interfere in any manner with the ordinary operation of the sash nor with the use of the ordinary Central sash-lock.
The nature of the device will fully appear from the subjoined description in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a window provided with the improved locking and fastening device. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan viewon the line L 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
In said drawings, A represents the lower sash, and A the upper sash.
B is the partingstrip, and ll' W the inner and outer guard-strips.
Just above the upper edge of the lower Sash are fixed, one upon the parting-strip and one upon the inner guard-strip, two staples C C. These staples C. C are stamped into form out of sheet metal, preferably, and occupy very little space, forming but a slight projection on the side of the strips to which they are attached.
D is a liatbolt ot' suitable length to reach from the inner guard-strip over the lower sash and into the upper sash, say, from four and one-half inches to six or more inches, as may be required in different-sized windows, and, say, half an inch in width and one-eighth of an inch in thickness. This bolt is entirely removable from the window, and when in use is inserted through the staples C C over the lower sash and into the side rail of the upper sash. Suitable sockets E, each consisting of a Hat metal plate fitted with means for attaching it vto the sash-as screwholes-and a slot to receive the bolt, are provided-at intervals on the side rail of the sash in position to receive the end of the bolt. The entire projection from the surface of the parting and guard strips need not be more than three-sixteenths of an inch in a practical device, of which thickness the boltforms oneeighth ot1 an inch and the sta-- ple onesixteenth of an inch. This will not interfere ordinarily with the raising of the lower sash, as the rabbet in the side rail of the lower sash to accommodate the partingstrip is commonly suiiiciently deep to allow the sash to pass such an obstruction. In case, however, of a closely-fitting sash it will only be necessary to sink the staples iiush with the surface of the parting and guard strips to which they are attached by cutting away a cavity to receive them in said strips. The fastener and lock is readily applicable to any ordinary window; and when the bolt is inserted in place both the lower and the upper sash are rendered immovable, as both are attached by means of the bolt to the window-casing. Thus the lower and upper sash may be both locked closed, or the lower sash locked closed and the upper sash locked at a partly-opened position, This is a great convenience where ventilation and security are desired. The entire apparatus is exceedingly cheap and of simple construction and adaptation. In case window-screens are employed the sash of such may also be thus locked.
I am aware of the construction of sashlock shown in patents, No. 390,873, of October 2, 1888, and No. 255,025, of March I4, 1882, and do not herein claim the construction in said patents or either ot' them.
I claim-- The combination, with the upper and the lower window-sashes, the former provided with sockets E, of a sliding fiat bolt D, extending across the lower sash and supported immediately above the same by flat staples attached to the parting and guard strips of the window-casing and adapted to be pushed into engagement with said sockets and to be withdrawn to give freedom to the lower sash, substantially as set forth.
JEROME D. FERR-EE.
