UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLF TANCZOS, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUN GARY.
LO C K A N D K EY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,902, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed August 20, 1889- Serial No. 321,394. (No model.)
,To aZl whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDoLF Tjmczos, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, anda resident of the city of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Keys, of which the following is a specification.
According to the presentinvention the lock and key are so constructed that the key shows at a glance whether the lock has been locked or not.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows in section the lock and key. Figs, 2 and 3 are inner views of the front and back lock-plates. Figs. 4 and 5 show the key separate; and Fig. 6 shows a modified form of key, partly in section.
The ordinary locking mechanisms are not shown in the drawings, as they may be of any suitable construction without departing from the substance of this invention.
The key a is provided with a sliding; piece 6. On turning the key a in the lock in the one directionfor instance, for lockingthis sliding piece I) is pressed against the cam d on the plate D and thereby caused to assume the position shown in Fig. 5. On turning the key a in the lock in the other directionfor instance, for unlocking-the sliding piece I) is pressed against the cam e of the plate E, and thereby caused to assume the position shown in Fig. 4. After removing the key from the lock it will, according to the position of the sliding pieceb, Figs. 4, 5, and 6, show whether the lock has been locked or not.
In order the better to prevent any accidental displacement of the sliding piece 12, a frictionspring f may be attached to the sliding piece, as shown in Fig. 6.
1 claim- 1. A key provided with a movable piece, in combination with a lock provided with cams to push the movable piece in one direction or the other, according to the way in which the key is turned, substantially as set forth.
2. A key provided with a movable piece and a friction-spring, in combination with a lock provided with cams to push the movable piece in one direction or the other, according to the way in which the key is turned, substantially as set forth;
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLF TANCZOS.
